Kellia and her husband were married in a “Pirates and Pagan beach wedding.” Surprisingly enough, this post is not about that wedding (as cool as it sounds). This post is about their other wedding! A week after their real-life wedding, their World of Warcraft avatars, Hamiltin and Rhialah, both gnome mages, were married in the Circle of Life, in the presence of members of their guild.
However, it may surprise you that a World of Warcraft wedding has much of the same problems as a real-life wedding. How? Well, you still have to find the right venue. Kellia explains,
“It was my husband David’s idea to have the WOW wedding. (David is a self-confessed altoholic.) Finding a venue was the hardest, everyone had different ideas. The biggest problem was staying out of areas where something/one would attack during the ceremony. I wanted it on one of the floating islands in Nagrand, but David was afraid someone would fall off and go splat. Circle of Life is on flat ground.”
Sometimes even vendors don’t show and your ceremony can get awkward:
“A last minute problem was that the person we had picked for the officiant, a priest from our guild, did not show. Fortunately, a Paladin from our allied guild was dressed for the occasion, and was prevailed upon to officiate. He made up a ceremony on the spot, invoking “The Light.” It was great.
However, we do not have ‘vent’ (the ability to speak to each other online), so we had to type everything and exchanging rings was through the clumsy medium of the trade window. But it all worked out in the end.”
And their receptions can rock! “Hamiltin and Rhialah” held their reception at Bruuk’s Inn in Ironforge, where the couple was feted with bawdy limericks and the alcohol flowed liberally. Later, the happy couple danced at Club Lyon in Dalaran where two DJs gave them a shout-out. Well, consider this another shout-out guys. Congratulations to y’all virtually and IRL.

My husband’s best friend met his wife via a text-based mud back in the day. In addition to their courthouse wedding, they got married in-game.
Cutest. Ever. I’d say it’s hard to arrange – not only do you need a venue, you need one where MONSTERS WON’T EAT YOU, am nam nam nam. Considering how many times I’ve had to corpserun today, this is tough. For me. Ahem.
:’) I love the outfits. WoW actually has a selection of dresses, including a white wedding dress – and there’s a tux! I’d have worn my elegant dress or lovely black dress to the reception, and /danced all night.
That is so out of this world. I love playing wow, but I never imagined someting like that. It’a very cool 🙂

Love this! When we first started planning our wedding we joked around about getting married in game first. We even had the outfits and everything. Then we lost interest in WoW haha. Buuuut this pretty much the most epic wedding ever covered. Just saying.

This is great, congrats to the happy couple! This is actually a fairly common practice. My fiance and I met through an online game and we got married in it at a convention for the game. Most of our guild, in game friends, and even the devs were there! There was also cake to be had IRL. I think this is a great way for a couple to reaffirm their love, especially when they share a common passion in a game!
We arranged to have a WoW wedding the week before our real one, but there was so much going on we wound up missing our own wedding! I felt so horrible, especially when the wedding presents started coming in D: I wonder if we could get around to a vow renewal…

I used to play WoW… I kinda want to get back into it because of this. I got out because I don’t really talk to the people that I played with anymore. Maybe somewhere in the Offbeat Empire, we can set up a place where we can exchange game information.
Hi and thanks to Megan for the write up and to everyone who commented. Given the number of brides I see on OBT who are gamers, I really think we ought to have, if we don’t already, a geeks and gamers group to help couples who want to incorporate game themes in their weddings. I have seen individual posts about games.

The Tribe used to have a Gamer group (along with hundreds of other micro-niche groups) but we realized last year that all the groups were making it harder and harder for Tribe members to find each other and communicate. More information here.
OMG! My husband and I totally did this the week before our RL wedding! Our guild surprised us by planning it and one of the only other girls in the guild even brought a wedding dress for my toon to wear. It was one of the sweetest things ever. congrats to the happy couple!

Love this! The fiance and I quit playing WoW just a few months ago (matter of fact his account JUST expired but he’s been resigned for some time). I had to show him this and all he said was “I would have killed them if it was possible”. Horde for life on a PvP server I suppose. 😀 Too cute though!

@Ariel You might want to reconsider for a group called Geeks and Gamers as technology is global, as is gaming of both the video the board variety. eg 12 million people around the world play WOW.
More and more women are enjoying such games and other forms of tech, and many couples have met through them or it plays a big part on their relationship. I even saw on video where a computer programmer had developed a kind of treasure hunt game that he put on his fiancee’s iPhone to lead her to the place where he proposed. Very Cool.
It doesn’t have to be game specific or tech specific, but more people are incorporating tech into their weddings. Maybe even steampunk can fit.
Kellia, the issue is not that I don’t understand the global reach of gaming, but rather that the reach is so enormous that it’s relevant to thousands of Tribe members — which is why we keep discussions in the main forum.

I absolutely love this article. I actually posted a link to it on my guilds forums so they could all see it. My fiancee and I both play WoW and love it. We will be having an in game wedding the week before our RL wedding and have invited several friends from our in game guild to join us for our RL wedding. It is going to be a blast!!
!!! I also thought of the floating islands in nagrand for an in-game wedding- it’s so pretty! I also really like the Temple of the Moon in Darnassus but unfortunately, my fiance and I are now horde and it would be too much work for him to have to tank Tyrande and all the npcs (I would heal him of course) long enough to exchange vows so that idea is out. I really love Ashenvale and the night elf buildings but since the small town guards have been beefed up, that’s probably not a great idea either. Lately I’ve been thinking mount hyjal but I’m not sure since people would be there doing dailies xD A lot of the priest old tier sets look awesome for a wedding dress btw I tried to grind BRD for a piece but it never dropped and I gave up. BUT the night elves in moonglade sell “traditional hanboks” which look a lot like Korean wedding attire, and they’re also very pretty.
I actually met my fiance while playing world of warcraft so we’re definitely going to have to have an in-game ceremony. We’ve been thinking about it for a while. Thank god we’re not on a pvp server because I’ve seen videos on youtube where the bride has been ganked!

The Ruins of Isildien in Feralas look alot like temple of the moon. If yu and your wedding party are high enough level to dispatch the ogres there, it night be the place for you.
I offer all my couples a free in-game WoW wedding along with their real life wedding if they are fellow WoW players. I use the same ceremony that they have in real life, I have an unlimited seat mumble server and I create a toon on their realm specifically for that event. I can even record it on video on a good day! I’ve done this for years and I love it when a couple lets me know they are up for it. How much more fun can you have? [don’t answer that!]
