What made our wedding offbeat: We were married on Halloween which got A LOT of flack from our families. We did everything exactly the way WE wanted to and didn’t take anyone’s advice on anything. My mother-in-law was extremely supportive and helped me plan every little detail…
- I rocked a black dress that I bought from a second hand store for roughly ninty bucks.
- Our accent color was a hard to match electric blue/turquoise.
- My DIY bouquet was made from black silk floral hair pins.
- We designed the tattoo-themed invites ourselves and ordered them from overnightprints.com. (SAVED SOOO MUCH!!)
- We had a non-traditional one layer cake.
- We didn’t do a bouquet toss, garter toss or have dancing. Just a gathering of folks to honor our joining of hearts.
- Our wedding was our venue’s FIRST EVER wedding held there. Oneighty is an old movie theater that has been converted into a Youth Building for a local church with a stage in one screening room and a game room in the other.
Tell us about the ceremony: Our ceremony was short and sweet. I walked out to Smother Me by The Used. Right after Sean and I started dating, he had late-night texted me some of the lyrics. I was a little taken aback because I had NO idea wtf he was talking about at the time because I had NEVER heard the song. I believe the exact lines were “I found my place in the world/Could stare at your face for the rest of my days/Now I can breathe, turn my insides out and smother me.”
Our biggest challenge: I would definitely have to say finding a venue. We had our hearts set on two other churches before we ended up at the Oneighty Youth Building. The first church we couldn’t get a call back from. The second church made us do re-marital counseling, which was no problem on our part, until my fiance and I left the first session feeling like we had been personally attacked.
Stand your ground and don’t get disappointed if a certain venue doesn’t work out like you expected it to. What matters in the end is that you will have a special bond with your partner. Keep your chin up and keep looking into different places.
My most meaningful moment: Just having my Dad there to walk me down the aisle really touched my heart. There are absolutely ZERO pictures of me walking down the aisle that are worth a darn because I could NOT stop boo-hooing. My Dad’s had uber amounts of heart problems and it scared me into thinking he may not be able to walk his baby girl down the aisle when the time came.
There was also a moment during which Sean and I slipped away right after the ceremony to go have a smoke. It was an intimate moment and It filled me with all the childish giddiness that puppy love derives from.
My funniest moment: When Sean and I were saying our vows, I started substituting the word “Hubby” for “Husband.” The Pastor then started to follow suit.

- Dress: Second hand store find. Check out your local thrift stores, etc. You never know WHAT you’re going to find. Especially if you’re going to wear a dress that ISN’T white. You’re sure to come across an old bridesmaid or prom dress that tickles your fancy.
- Invitations: overnightprints.com. We got 250 invites (4×6 postcard size) for around eighty bucks.
- Shoes: I wore zebra print flats from Target. I still wear them to this day! I absolutely LOVE them!
- Cake: Brookeshire’s/SuperOne Yes, it was just from a grocery store’s bakery but we didn’t mind.
- The majority of our other decorations came from Hobby Lobby or other party supply stores.
