We got a request from an Offbeat Bride reader for us to feature more offbeat menu ideas that aren't about desserts. We've covered wedding cakes and cake alternatives, but what else should you feed your guests?

I thought I'd start off our menu feature roundups with my favorite of all the kinds of menus: BRUNCH!

Ah, the brunch wedding — budget-friendly and delicious. And don't get hung up on tradition… brunch can take place at ANY time. (Breakfast-for-dinner, anyone?)

  1. Awesome! I love me some cheesey hashbrown casserole – a great addition to the brunch menu.
    Now I need someone to invite me to a wedding where they serve brunch…

    • I did this for my wedding, along with biscuits and gravy, country ham, eggs, and mimosas. It rocked.

  2. We did a brunch menu, and it was fantastic! My favorite part was the espresso bar we rented in the lobby instead of “cocktail hour”. It was actually not too expensive, because it was already on-site. We served huge pans of baked eggs with different fillings, roasted sweet and new potatoes, fruit platters, muffins and quick breads, homemade jams (well, everything was homemade), ham, green salad, and wild rice salad. Something for all tastes and diets! Pics URL in my name, scroll about 2/3 down for a few food shots.

  3. We’re doing a lunch menu with possibly some brunch/breakfasty stuff on it. Let me tell you – it is SO MUCH CHEAPER! And there are so many crowd pleasing options!

  4. Oh, I love brunch items! I’m doing some semi-brunch items in cocktail hour.

    I love a southern grits & toppings bar. Think cheese, shrimp, sausage, fruit jellies, etc.

    I also consider pimento cheese to be somewhat brunchy and perfect served on a crostini with a fried green tomato on top. (Or is that only okay in North Carolina? Either way, it’s cheesy & delicious!)

  5. OMG prosciutto cups. This makes me want to experiment with bacon-wrapped quiches… I’m not having a brunch wedding, but hellz yeah bacon cups!

  6. We had little cups of tomato bisque with small squares of grilled cheese sandwich suspended over them with toothpicks. Great for walking around, and super fun and delicious!

    Also, at the same table where you got your coffee, we had whipped cream, chocolate shavings, and chocolate and caramel syrups. People loved it!

Grilled cheese sandwiches – especially cut into a fun shape – are always popular for brunch. a make-your-own station can work too. add mugs of soup and it’s complete – super-budget-friendly too, as long as you stick to affordable cheeses. when we did this for the kids, the adults all got in line too!

  8. So cool! I did a waffle bar for my friend’s baby shower; it was easy, cheap, and a big hit. I also did a lower-brow take on the quail eggs in prosciutto cups for my Atkins-y husband — regular old deli ham & chicken eggs work just fine too for a fun breakfast treat.

  9. We’re doing brinner (breakfast for dinner)!! It’s what’s made it possible for us to have a caterer due to budget restrictions so it’s SUPER affordable.

    We’re having bacon, egg & cheese biscuits, pancakes with wild berry fruit topping, hash browns, fresh fruit, fruit infused water, and sweet tea.

    I’m super excited. It’s going to be delicious and awesome.

  10. We are looking for alternative ideas, especially as wedding cake is so expensive. A normal 3 tier cake is enough (I calculated around £90) but then if you mention it’s for a wedding the price goes up even more.

    I want cupcakes or something original – the doughnuts look impressive. A sweet idea.

    • Sometimes the batter for a “wedding” cake is denser and sweeter than regular cakes. It depends on how traditional the bakery is. Shop around.

  11. And don’t forget – quiche!!
    The caterer we hired for the wedding also had a cook’s special baked oatmeal, it was divine with cinnamon, raisins, and real cream over top.
    And when tasting wines and beer to go with the meal, think about what will taste good with eggs, which are an integral part of most brunches. We ended up with a syrah, and peach sparkling wine, both were BIG hits!

  12. We are planning to have a “breakfast tea” with caramels rolls before the ceremony and then after the ceremony a “brunch” with fritatta, a greek yogurt bar with honey, berry compote and granola, and lots of mango and strawberries.

  13. Man this is totally making me question my evening wedding. It’s a Halloween wedding so I wanted it to be at night so we could give it the appropriate creep factor. But I LOVE breakfast! NOM!

    We’re doing a chili bar. With all the fixings and toppings and corn bread along with some appetizers, buffalo wings, and chicken fingers for the kidlets.

  14. We had a brunch for dinner wedding. We originally chose it for sentimental reasons (our first date was over pancakes), but it ended up being a very practical choice, too. It’s super easy to accommodate meat eaters and non-meat eaters at the same breakfast, and it’s SO MUCH LESS EXPENSIVE than dinner. We had a full brunch buffet, a hashbrown station, an omelette (egg or tofu) station, and a crepe station for less than our caterer would have charged for lunch or dinner without “specialty” stations. We and our guests were all very happy with the choice.

  15. We’ve settled on a brunch for a few reasons, mainly price, and also variety. I can’t wait. Who doesn’t like brunch? You really can’t go wrong with all the choices. The facility we chose has brunch regularly, so they know how to do it well. Now I am just saving up because I really want an omelet station and waffle bar. Now I am hungry.

We’ve decided on a brunch, the only problem is that two of the guests have severe airborne egg allergies, so now we’re trying to figure out a good menu that will also accommodate the people who can’t eat gluten or dairy. We also have a guest who is on a keto diet. Yikes. Thank goodness we have 30 months until the wedding.
