The Offbeat Bride: Ash, Photographer
Her offbeat partner: Frank, brings home the bacon (literally, he's a clerk at a meat market)
Date and location of wedding: Awbury Arboretum, Philadelphia, PA — April 8, 2017
Budget: $6000
Our offbeat wedding at a glance:
We had a loose theme of video games, and our colors were pink and gold. We made almost everything ourselves, from our Zelda-themed treasure chest card box to our level select seating chart and all of the decorations. I had a Perler bead love ball and masterball Pokemon-themed bouquet and Frank had a matching love ball boutonniere.
We had a limited budget and our guest list was small (45 people), so we wanted to keep things intimate and relaxed. Friends helped to set up and DJ.
My dress was pink and I had rainbow unicorn hair (with a sassy undercut!). Frank rocked a pink shirt, blue pixel tie, and red Converse.
Tell us about the ceremony:
Our ceremony started at noon outside the Francis Cope House, a historical 1800s house at Awbury Arboretum. We danced down the aisle to “Staying Power” by Queen and had a non-religious ceremony where life was compared to a video game. Our officiant addressed us as Player One and Player Two (which our rings also have engraved on them), and ended the ceremony with "I now pronounce this a Two-Player Game."
The whole thing was short and sweet, and we danced back out triumphantly to the Pokemon Theme.
Tell us about your reception:
The reception took place at the same location as the ceremony, and right afterwards. We had dining tables set up end-to-end to maximize the cozy feel and make sure everyone got to know one another. The table decor consisted of DIYed pixel heart table numbers, pink tablecloths, and centerpieces made up of thrift store platters, glass bottles, and knick-knacks.
Our food was catered by Boston Market, and a few family members brought desserts as well. We had “Health” and “Mana” fruit punches, and our favor bags contained pixel heart soap, candies, and Pokemon temporary tattoos.
We made a playlist on Spotify and played music from a P/A system that we got online. Everything was low-key and fuss free, and we left out details we didn't feel we needed, like a cake, bouquet toss, or guest book. Everything was done by 4:00 pm and guests could spend the rest of their day as they pleased, including wandering the grounds of the arboretum where it took place.
What was your most important lesson learned?
The biggest lesson we learned was that you really don't have to do ANYTHING that you don't want to at your wedding. At first we had trouble realizing that there is nothing you NEED to do to make a wedding….well, a wedding. But once we got over that hump, the planning went smoothly and we worked out a timeline and setup that made sense for us and our budget, and our families were thankfully on board.
