Not that I have anything against Etta James' “At Last” or Michael Buble's “Everything,” — they're both a perfect first dance song — but I've heard them both WAY too many times at weddings.
So, combining my database of musician friends (some of whom made the list) with the Offbeat Wed editorial team's tastes, we've compiled a list of totally not overused first dance songs… from the silly, to the romantic, to the extremely controversial! Because when the newlyweds step onto the dance floor, we want to keep things unique!
The goal here is to share wedding songs that you might not have heard too many times. We love the likes of Jason Mraz, Ed Sheeran, John Legend, Adele, Jack Johnson, and Frank Sinatra too, but if you want your guests to feel surprised at your reception, you might want to go for one of these more unusual first dance songs.

Oh, you want more?
There’s also ‘Dolphin’s Cry’ by Live – a beautiful song that we used while signing the register at my first wedding. I entered to Alanis Morisette’s ‘Head over feet’ – such an awesome song! – and we exited to Wagner’s ‘Ride of the Valkyries’.
We’re doing “Song for Us” by Eric Michael!
I this is my first time commenting. I’m playing wedding planner for my little sister, and I’ve taken the opportunity to find ideas for myself. *someday* .
My suggestions:
“When You Really Love a Woman” -Bryan Adams
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hq2KgzKETBw
Perhaps this next one is overused. What do you think?
‘Everything I do, I do it for you” by Bryan Adams
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGoWtY_h4xo
Could be a first dance, vows, or a song to walk down the aisle to:
“One Hand, One Heart” from West Side Story (Bernstein)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_A0fVWomF90
I think this has been listed by one other bride . I’ll bring up anyway
‘Somebody’s getting married” From “The Muppets take Manhattan”
http://youtu.be/g0P5FzSe3qw
;
Wow! This is an awesome list that will make up most of my evening wedding’s music!
Just can’t believe that no one has mentioned “Trees” by Marty Casey and the Love Hammers. Fantastic song, offbeat, danceable, and not over done. We’re using it for our recessional.
Thanks for all the great tips, Offbeatbride!
“Fidelity” by Regina Spektor.
If you can dance fast, “Papa Gene’s Blues” by The Monkees:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_N9DnLUPmQ
“I have no more than I did before
But now I’ve got all that I need
For I love you and I know you love me”
I think we are set on using Cat Power’s Sea of Love for the processional, Grinderman’s Palaces Of Montezuma for the recessional.
Lykke Li’s Tonight as our first dance (although she does the most tear jerking cover of ‘will you still love me tomorrow’) EVER! Was a tough toss up!
For our last dance (yup we are having a last dance!) The Walkmen’s In The New Year… (thats if we’re still standing hey?!) hiccup! 🙂
We are thinking of the first dance to “Angel Eyes” by Steelheart. Love the 8o’s.
We are having my little sister sing an acoustic version of The Cure: Friday I’m in Love. We are getting married on a Friday, I bloody love The Cure, and most importantly it was one of my late father’s favourite songs. It is very special to us! x
My fiance and I are HUGE David Bowie fans, so we are torn between “Word on a Wing” and “Wild is the Wind”, both off of Station to Station. When we first got together, he told me that “Word on a Wing” was his song for me, so it has a lot of sentimental value, and will probably be the song we choose.
I can’t believe nothing by Frank Sinatra or Dean Martin made th “oldies by goodies” section. They have some really good stuff. Cheesy, yes, but not overplayed.
Fantastic first dance songs that are totally unique are: Endlessly by Green River Ordinance and Uncertainly Certain by Green River Ordinance
Also, Love Uncompromised by Jason Castro
All amazing songs for first dance at a wedding.
Best first dance song…. Swept Away by Full Turnout.
Anyone know of any good Reggae songs? I like “True Love” by SOJA (Soldiers of Jah Army) but i cant really find anything else.
My husband and I chose Chris Cornell’s Finally Forever- which most people at our wedding said was appropriate since we’d been engaged for 7 years.
“marry me ” by amanda marshall
simple, beautiful and perfect for New Orleans wedding !
is there any Father / Daughter dance songs that hasn’t been played to death ??? Trying to find a song for our wedding.
Give this link a shot.
I’ve shot a lot of weddings over the years, and I’m still waiting for a couple to dance to “You made me so very happy” by Blood Sweat & Tears.
Maybe I’m too old???
@ James That’d be a perfect song as first dance as husband and wife. But,I’m currently looking for Father & Daughter dance song.. We’re having a motorcycle wedding & want to not have the traditional song’s played if possible.
We’re using “Tangled up in you” by Staind… great lyrics and great band! I love your Rammstein suggestion though!
“my romance” by anyone, Roberta Flack, Tony Bennett, Carly Simon, the list goes on and on.
Spur of the moment choice by my Fiance, Talking Bird by Death Cab for Cutie. We have parrots, so not only could it be a love song, we could also honor them since they have been our children for the past 5 years. His dad played the song for us one day and we have loved it ever since.
We danced to “Le soleil est pres de moi” by air.
I noticed that there weren’t many bluegrass or (for lack of a better term, “hippie”) songs up here.
For someone looking for something fast and bluegrassy: “Born to Be With You”- Chatham County Line.
Leftover Salmon does a great version of “Lovin in my Baby’s Eyes”
Old Crow Medicine Show- “Wagon Wheel”
Phish- “Waste”
O.A.R.- “Wonderful Day”
Eastmountainsouth- “So Are You to Me” is a beautiful, slow song
Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros- “Home”
And for the person who mentioned the Beatles’ “I Will”, there’s a great cover by an indie band called Roma di Luna on the Minnesota Beatle Project Vol.1 (you can get it on iTunes). There’re also some great versions of “I Want to Hold Your Hand” and “Two of Us” on some of the other volumes of the Minnesota Beatles Project albums.
I walked down the isle to Tracy Chapman’s “Wedding Song”. I haven’t seen it listed on any of these wedding websites and it was by far the most amazing and best worded song I ever heard for a wedding… and I have played it over and over again since I have been married and still love it as much as the first time I heard it. you can find it on youtube
If I ever get married, I’d like to dance to either “Come Away with Me” or “The Nearness of You” by Norah Jones. “When I Fall In Love” is also a wonderful song, and probably my favorite love song at the moment is “Kiss from a Rose” by Seal.
My fiance and I are dancing to Steelheart’s “Never Let You Go”
Amazing.. I dont do that sappy thing this song definetly is more us
My original choice for our first dance is 311’s Love Song….but that may change. havent decided yet!!
My lover and I both want to travel, and neither of us can imagine being in the same place for the rest of our lives, so “Home” by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros is perfect for us. It’s beautiful. I cry every time I hear it.
we are using “Home” as our recessional! it is so beautiful… i never get sick of hearing it!
I am walking in to “Come Away with Me” by Norah Jones- played by paino only. Fiance and I are dancing to “The Luckiest” By Ben folds- it has been our song for over 10 years!
Hi, been looking at the site for ideas for our silver wedding party. Its going to be a knees up but think our dance will be The Jams English Rose haunting smoochie song…broken off rudely in the middle with The Specials Too Much,Too Young. We were but its worked
We are dancing to Adele’s version of “make you feel my love”, beautiful song
Voltaire – “Stuck With You” is a beautiful duet with dark humor. It’s more about being stuck with someone who you might be unhappy with sometimes, but you stick by them anyway. Perfect for those who realize they aren’t perfect and marriage is a work in progress.
You need some David Choi in that list ^-^ His first two albums are nothing but love songs <3
We are totally dancing to “First Day of My Life.” Even though it doesn’t really have a “dancy” feel. I still love it and it’s so perfect it makes me cry thinking about it. My fiancee put it on one of the first CDs he made me. 🙂
Currently working on convincing FH to do We Go Together from Grease for our first dance. Mostly because I want to choreograph a killer dance to go with it. It’s so peppy and upbeat!
All Black by Good Charlotte, and or F*ckin’ Perfect by P!nk… 🙂
I’d love to suggest “January Wedding” by the Avett Brothers for a, duh, January wedding.
We’re using Avenged Sevenfold’s Warmness on the Soul
My husband and I also danced our first dace together to Avenged Sevenfold’s Warmness on the soul. <3 Congrats Krystine. 🙂
So I didn’t go through all 26 pages of comments to see if someone’s posted this one already, but if they have it deserves another mention. The Gambler by Fun would make an awesome first dance song. It has an up-beat sound and such wonderful lyrics. My personal favorite:
“When I grow up I won’t just buy you a rose. I will buy the flower shop and you will never be lonely.”
aw, i have loved reading these so i thought i’d share ours: With You by The Subways (don’t think it’s been mentioned yet!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJDYI6jo98o
we just kind of jumped around and our friends jumped in to join us about halfway through – it went off.
“January Wedding” by the Avett Brothers is really cute… especially if it’s a January wedding!
We got a family member to do an instrumental version of Nick Cave’s “Into My Arms”
Simply to cut out on the religious drivel at the start.
… as fate would have it, it never got played until the speeches!
My FH and I will dance to “our day will come” covered by amy whinehouse I love this cover
We are big fans of Bullet for my Valentine, so our first dance is going to be to their “Forever and Always” song. We are doing the waltz to it, and hopefully it will be beautifully sick.
We’re planing dance to – A whole new world, this is a song from Alladin. 🙂
I love Bend Sinister’s “The Little Things” which you can listen to here:
http://bendsinister.bandcamp.com/track/the-little-things
That being said, their first song I got into was “Things will get better”. The band was right. Things DID get better!
Stars “My Favourite Book”. Next mission: Get fiance to agree to this song.
We’re planing a whole new world from the alladins soundtrack, but we’ve got still 1year and guys You know how it’s changing :). But there are our few fevs:
– Whole new world
– Because You loved me
– Everything i do (i do it for You)
– I don’t want to miss a thing
The FH and I are mostly into Rock and Heavy Metal. Not only is our wedding off beat in that its an outdoor bbq style affair with a camp-out to follow (we’re holding it at a campground in our county, and renting out a bunch of campsites), but the focus is less on the ceremony and more on the festivities after.
All of our music choices so far are way unconventional: Procession starts with Crazy Train, I walk down to Another Day by Dream Theater, Our first dance is either Kiss Me (I’m $%!7 Faced) by Dropkick Murpheys or Sleeping Sun by Nightwish.
The father/daughter dance was requested by our dear friend, Sweet Child O Man as covered by Slash and Myles Kenedy.
The Mother/Son dance is Simple Man by Shinedown.
The music selections for the rest of the night range from Alice Cooper to Gwar, and Three Doors Down to Marylin Manson.
let it be me-ray lamontagne
forever-Ben Harper
wanted-hunter hayes
sweet Melissa-the allman brothers
wonderwall-Ryan Adams
it beats for you- my morning jacket
argue with heaven-David Ramirez
40 dogs (Romeo and Juliet)-bob Schneider
alllll FAVS and all wonderful songs. give em a listen 🙂
Our first dance song will be Blue Swede’s version of Hooked on a Feeling. My fiance has been singing this song to me at random moments since we first became a serious couple, it’s the closest thing we have to an ‘our song’.
We’re planning on “You are my sunshine” , because FH used to sing it to cheer me up when I was in the hospital being an inconsolable mess (I’m better now 🙂 ) Though we still haven’t chosen whose version.
We are having White Snake as our first dance, its always been our song x
Late comment, but when we get married my fiance and I will dance to Alice Cooper’s “You and Me”.
We’re huge WWE fans, so I’m going to walk into the venue with the traditional wedding march starting, then being interrupted by Cult of Personality by Living Colour. CM Punk <3
We're going to have Love You To Death by Type O Negative as our first dance, then as it winds down…
"Every day I'm shufflin'!" and away we'll all go 😀
Mario Kart Love song has to be played somewhere, as do Tim Minchin – You Grew on Me and Death Cab for Cutie – Follow You Into the Dark.
Probably have something by Meat Loaf as our parents dance – both my dad and future mother in law adore him. What About Love, maybe?
Our first dance will be to Divide Me, by Kalai. Melts me everytime I hear it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54pf1I3cBBY
Our first dance will be to Divide Me, by Kalai. Melts me everytime I hear it.
I’m thinking about Always by Panic at the Disco (hear it). Tho I’m sure it will change as I listen to way to much music to make any deff disisions haha
I’ve been hearing some friends talk about using “Everlong” by the Foo Fighters… The regular version is cool and upbeat so it’s a pretty good dancing song, but the acoustic version is pretty and mellow, good for slow dancing.
My fiance and I are doing “Come What May” from Moulin Rouge…it’s the perfect song since because of the crap we’ve dealt with lately and have, and still are, sticking through it…
We are dancing to Alabama Shakes “I found you”…it is more upbeat and we LOVE that song!!
Don’t know if it’s been overdone, but we danced to “Head Over Feet” by Alanis Morissette. My husband remembered the first time he heard it hoping that one day he’d find a girl that he would feel that way about. Took him 10 years, but he claims it was worth the wait. (cue the awwws)
“Albacore” by Ani Difranco off her newest album – Which Side Are You On?
Definitely not typical Ani – lyrics are about her own marriage! And the melody is gorgeous and perfect for slow-dancing.
We’re doing a pretty non-traditional ceremony and likely won’t do the first dance thing (also the thought of dancing in front of 100 guests gives me hives), but I’m set on playing Pavement’s “Major Leauges” right after our friend/officiant declares us married. If FORCED to do a first dance, though, it’d be tough to beat Pulp’s “Common People.”
We have Al Green’s “Love and Happiness” on our list!
We also have Drug Cabin “One I love”, Amos Lee “Sweet Pea” and Emeli Sande’ “Where I Sleep”.
Also walking down the isle to Cat Power’s “Sea of Love”
Loved the list!
Join me in Death is one of my most favourite songs 😀
What about Brandi Carlile’s, “Heart’s Content” off of her new Bear Creek album? Does everyone think that this is appropriate?
Hello! I wasn’t sure where to send this — but the comments scrolling seems to be broken. I can get to pages 1,2,3, and 27; but nothing in the middle. Is it my computer being weird? I’ve tried for the past couple of days. I’ve noticed it on this post and the Father-daughter one.
Thanks, Jessica
You’re right! My developer is working to fix this right now.
Die Toten Hosen – Unsterblich 🙂
Here with english lyrics:
We’ll be dancing to “Sea Song” by Lisa Hannigan
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRF_KoXhJsg
and walking out to “Morning Song” by Jewel.
What about the country play list? How about “Forever and Ever, Amen” by Randy Travis or “I’d Love to Lay You Down” by Conway Twitty?
I am considering Cee Lo Green’s cover of the Band of Horses song “No one’s gonna love you”. He’s hesitant, but I LOVE it!!
I plan on walking down the aisle to Elvis’ “Can’t help falling in love” and our first dance is going to be Aerosmith’s “Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing” and my mom and I are planning on dancing to Eminem’s “Lose yourself” from the movie 8 Mile. My fiance and I are a mixture of traditional and off beat.
“Je N’ai Pas Des Mots”, by Vic Mignogna is going to be our first dance song. ^_^
We were originally going to have the man himself sing it at our wedding, but then he found that he was to be in Australia during that weekend, so we are settling for CD. 😛
I REALLY REALLY want our first dance to be to “Every Thug Needs a Lady” by Alkaline Trio (The Damnesia album version). I think it’s creepily romantic…my fiance doesn’t think it could work as a first dance song, but I do…opinions?
Ahh this is the sort of list I have been looking for. I think it has come down to either The luckiest- by ben folds, Mario kart love song- by sam hart, or sea of love by cat powers
one I am kinda surprised that isn’t on here (and I looked through all 17 pages) is Angel by Aerosmith
We are using Rainbow Connection, originally a Muppet song, we are using the Willie Nelson Cover!
Me and my man are getting married after 19 years and three kids. After 19 years of ups, downs, joy sorrow and long periods of the absolute mundane, there aren’t too many songs that don’t apply to us! I’m having so much fun planning a wedding that can be whatever we want and nothing we don’t. We aren’t doing a first dance, formally anyway, but we have have a long playlist already. I’m thinking pre-ceromony of Come On Up To The House-Sarah Jarosz and Here Comes The Sun Again- M.ward as a call to organize. Immediately post ceremony it’s currently a three way tie between Steady As She Goes- The Raconteurs, Memories Are Made of This- Johnny Cash or Breathless- Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.
Some good suggestions!
My fiance and I are using “Grow Old With You,” but it’s the version from The Wedding Singer musical, so it’s longer, has more verses, and is sung as a duet 🙂
Josh Grobin’s You Raise Me Up
We’ll be dancing to either Foo Fighters ‘Everlong’ (our song) or their cover of ‘This Will Be Our Year’.
Another fave of mine is ‘Take a Look’ by Irma Thomas.
My man and I are getting married this September after a 19 year and three kids trial run! The great thing about our day is that there isn’t any mood or sentiment that doesn’t apply. We have a long playlist. 🙂 I will not be walking down the aisle (thank you OBB for alternative ideas,) so to gather the crowd around us:
M. Ward’s Here Comes The Sun Again.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oARKRB6hJX8
Recessional: three way tie(help me break it!)
Johnny Cash’s cover of Memories Are Made Of This (the lyrics are perfect)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfBp_dumnH4
Nick Cave’s Breathless
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TI8xPw2aQA
The Raconteur’s Steady As She Goes.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7aOWIFgIZQ
First Dance: “Our song”
Pete’ Krebs’ Her Dress So Green In The Moonlight.
http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/petekrebs2 track 5
We are dancing to Times like These by the Foo Fighters!!
Barenaked Ladies – If I Had A Million Dollars Would be a cute and silly one 🙂
Here’s another new idea: Imelda May’s “Kentish Town Waltz”
Plus also for the traditionalist offbeat brides (har-de-har :D), it’s an actual waltz. And I love the lyrics!
Edit, one more idea, not a classic “lovesong”, I’d call it, judging by the lyrics, but fitting nonetheless.
Jonsi’s “Go Do”
This one is perfect in so many ways!
I looooove that song! We talked about using it, but found another song that was just perfect.
We are dancing to Oasis “Talk Tonight” since we have been long distance (England-USA) for 3 years. It pretty much sums up the good and bad of long distance love. Bonus: my fiancé plays it for me when I am bummed out and missing him 🙂
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvvMHXVUc5M&w=420&h=315%5D
my husband and I danced to the acoustic version of “head over feet” by alanis morrisette, and i danced with my dad to “daughter” by loudin wainright (it describes my relationship with my dad perfectly)…but the best was for the ceremony my wedding party walked in to O.A.R’s “i feel home” and my dad and gramps walked me down the aisle to “here comes my girl” by tom petty!
Not sure if it’s overdone but…
“Come Away With Me” by Nora Jones
I think it’s simple, but nice.
“Your Arms Around Me” by Jens Lekman
It paints such a beautiful picture of love during the good and the bad. Makes me tear up every time I hear it (which is so weird because it’s an upbeat song!)
Happy to see my choice isn’t up there! We are trying our hardest to have a song that no one else has used before. 🙂
Thanks to this awesome list, my FH and I discovered Peter Gabriel’s “Book of Love” and that is what we are going with! It makes us both want to cry it’s so beautiful! And Scrubs-licious.
Our first dance was to “Lucky” by Bif Naked. Hubby had a rough go with cancer, so we felt the song truly fitting.
My fiance and I are planning to dance to “As Lover’s Go” by Dashboard Confessionals.
I’m having harry belafonte- jump in the line for my first dance
Our first dance song is going to be Damned If I do by Jace Everett. I’d put that in the sexy category! I’m also walking down the aisle to Song To The Siren off of the album This Mortal Coil. Both are awesome songs!
My husband and I danced to Warmness on the Soul by Avenged Sevenfold. I love A7X, and also had complete creative control over the music at the wedding, otherwise it would have been totally sappy and full of line dances…yikes!
My boyfriend hates dancing, so once we started talking about wedding, I started thinking of songs that had great meaning, but were on the short side. My first thoughts were Jim Croce’s Time in a Bottle, or Death Cab for Cutie’s I Will Follow You Into the Dark. Eventually, I hit on an idea my bf thought was perfect – Jonathon Coulton’s You Ruined Everything. It’s short enough for him, obscure enough for me, and has the WTF factor that we love doing to our friends. “I’ve forgotten who I was before you ruined everything, in the nicest way”. Sweetest song ever.
We did Wildflowers, Tom Petty. I’ve also heard one I thought would be good – Feel the Tide, Mumford and Sons.
At the most personalised wedding I have ever seen, I sang “Friday I’m in Love” by The Cure with my old room mate playing uke during the signing part of the ceremony. We personalised the bridge to be about the B&G and I did a kazoo solo. So much fun!
One song that I’d love to have as our first dance is For You by Tracy Chapman. I haven’t told my OH yet but fingers crossed he goes for it 🙂
We’ll be having a live version of I’d do anything for loves intro as it’s played in guitar and Violin and is one of our favourite songs 🙂
I’ve found two that I think haven’t been done as first dance songs very often. Then again, I haven’t gone to many weddings, so I don’t know how accurate my assessment would be. One is ‘Free In You’ by Indigo Girls. The other is ‘This At Last’ by Christopher Grundy. ‘This At Last’ is a Christian song, but it’s progressive (a.k.a liberal) Christian.
Hep Pretty Girl by Kip Moore
We danced to “Caught Up In the Rapture” by Anita Baker, which was perfect because my husband loves Anita Baker and that song always makes me think of him. I have never heard anyone else have Anita Baker, much less that song, as a first-dance – not even “Sweet Love” or whatever. She’s underrated!
We are dancing to INXS Never Tear Us Apart 🙂
My fiancé and I enjoy a vast array of musical genres. The contenders for our first dance are: A Kiss to Build a Dream On-Louis Armstrong; La Vie en Rose- Louis Armstrong; Book of Love-Peter Gabriel; Dance Me to the End of Love-Leonard Cohen; Life on Earth-Band of Horses; other songs to be played: Don’t Know Why-Norah Jones; The Only Exception-Paramore; Pyro-Kings of Leon (this song has special meaning); Chasing Cars-Snow Patrol; I Love You-Paul McCartney & Wings; Soft Shock-Yeah Yeah Yeahs; Fildelity-Regina Spektor; It’s Oh So Quiet-Bjork; Sea of Love-Cat Power; All I Need -Radiohead; lots of: Elvis Costello; The Beatles; Cab Calloway; Coldplay; Phoenix; Bright Eyes; Squirrel Nut Zippers; Yeah Yeah Yeahs; The Cure; all KINDS of Queen!; Bee Gees; Fleetwood Mac; Radiohead… That being said, I was surprised no one, that I saw, mentioned a few offbeat, fun songs: Dammit, Janet and Time Warp (Rocky Horror Picture Show); and A Little Piece of Heaven by A7X. I understand them not wanting to be played by more conservative couples, especially if children/elderly persons/religious guests are in attendance, but they’re really fun (the RHPS music is probably easier to dance to, compared to the ever changing tempo of the A7X song). Cheers and Congrats to everyone!!
I have chosen Indigo Girls “Free In You” Beautiful in every way regardless of the ‘team you play for.’ As on older first time bride (44), it’s like it was written for us.
I’ll be dancing to Phish’s, “Waste,” but I always thought, “Old Skin,” by Jeremy Messersmith is a perfect first dance song. Fingers crossed this link works 😉
http://grooveshark.com/s/Old+Skin/3JX0Qz?src=5
Here are the lyrics to the song I just mentioned, “Old Skin,” by Jeremy Messersmith <3
When you're old and gray
Lines etched upon your face
Put your hair down
I'll kiss your brow
Call you beautiful
Our love was made to last
We fade like photographs
Wrinkled and worn
The edges are torn
Unmistakable
I'll love your old skin
Love your old skin
Love your old skin
I'll love your old skin
When you're feeling tired
Weary and uninspired
The life that you knew
Seems worthless to you
Unavoidable
When your eyes won't shine
Best years are far behind
I'll hold you close
Never let go
Unforgettable
And when there's nothing left
Ashes and silhouettes
I hope that I find my rest
Next to you
I love all of these suggestions! I’ve added a bunch of songs to our list of reception possibilities.
FH and I are planning, for our first dance, “Just Breathe” by Pearl Jam. Our first “official” date was at a PJ concert. Our first kiss came after the concert in the parking log, after we both admitted to each other that we wanted to kiss or at least hold hands during that song! Can’t wait!!! Only 18 months away… 🙂
“Skullcrusher Mountain” by Jonathan Coulton
“The Ratio of Freckles to Stars” by Halou
One that I’ve just discovered and love is “Rhythm of Love” by Plain White T’s. And, for the more otaku brides, we used “Eyes on Me” from Final Fantasy 8 at our wedding.
I have been thinking of using “Not My Slave” by Oingo Boingo. Some of the lyrics are “With everyone around telling us what to do, With deathening sound whisper I love you”
We danced to This Must Be The Place by the Talking Heads, and it was wonderful. Our officiant read the lyrics during our ceremony, and that’s when we both started crying.
We’re doing Paper Moon covered by Erin McKeown. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygP5YJjJnEA
my fiancé chose “A Bird Without Wings” by Louis de Bernières.. I cried! I had never heard of it but it’s such an amazing love song!
I would suggest White dress by Ben Rector. Its romantic without being slow. It literally made me cry when I first heard it because i completely connected with what he says to how I feel.
We’re considering “The Power of Two” by the Indigo Girls, “Fireflies” by Owl City, & really leaning toward “Beginnings” by Chicago. What can we say? We’re old school (and a little older!)
We’ve been thinking Someone Else’s Life– Joshua Radin. It was our first dance song too, so that helps.
I noticed you had Portishead’s “All Mine” on the list…I LOVE that song! My wife is a big reader of OB; we did our first dance to “Flypaper” by K-Os (it’s “our song,” more or less).
Sorry if anyone’s said it but Toothpaste Kisses by the Maccabees is a good one too.
I want to have the Moldy Peaches song but the version from Juno. We shall see. 8 months to go.
My fiance suggested Ray Lamontagne. I had never heard of him or any of his songs, but I quickly fell in love with his sound! Check him out!
lol’d @ Rick Roll.
Ohne Dich is a very special song for me and my Mr. Man. We’re diehard fans, and went to see them live together. Long mushy story short, we went as friends, and after the concert ended, we were official bf&gf. =] So, seeing this song mentioned in the list made me smile like a dork. I’ll admit, while they are my favorite band… I never took Rammstein as being romantic up until that point; who knew?
R.E.M. – At My Most Beautiful
Any Richard Hawley fans…? I was thinking ‘Tonight the Streets are Ours’
I’m thinking “Here Comes the Sun” for my processional and “Smother Me” by The Used for our first dance.
You guys missed a good one! “You’re My Best Friend” by Queen. That’s probably going to be mine and my fiance’s first dance song.
Great find! We actually included this on our father/daughter dance songs list, too!
We are using Jackie Evancho’s “Dark Waltz”. It’s such a lovely waltz and the words are really poignant if you listen to them. I am even choreographing it because I hate when the couple just sways back and forth!
Warren Zevon – Let nothing come between us
I am gettnig married in May and am using a relevant song, Jason Mraz “I won’t give up”. It may be a tear jerker so we are seguing to Rick Astley “Never going to give you up”
– Chris
I love the idea of rickrolling your own reception. 😀
Does anyone have any good , unique ideas for a mom/son dance ?
“Simple Man” by Lynyrd Skynyrd?
I really love this locally made (from Maine) song!
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BBRML7Q/ref=dm_dp_trk8?ie=UTF8&qid=1367273668&sr=8-3
Twilight by Dawn Landes was our first dance. I also love No Children by the Mountain Goats and Cynically Yours by Amy Rigby.
I’ve always loved The Zombies. Foo Fighters have a remake of “This Will Be Our Year” and it’s much more slowed down.
ours was ‘Dedicated to the one I Love’ by the Shirelles. Along the lines of Etta James, not as ubiquitous. It was also a special, important song for us personally as a couple.
Loooove “Make Her Mine”!! 😀
We’re dancing to Red Hot Chili Peppers “Hard to Concentrate”
Van Morrison – SOMEONE LIKE YOU! ~ Makes me bawl my eyes out every time I hear it!
How about “When I’m 64” by the Beatles?
My husband and I decided to go with Garth Brooks “Two of a Kind, Working on a Full House”. It’s not real original, but during the planning of the wedding we found out we were pregnant so it fit perfectly. It’s almost five years later and we are still two short of a full house but we have plenty of time!
“Here’s to Us” by Halestorm! Lzzy Hale ROCKS! Our first concert together included Halestorm. <3
Our first dance was to “The Story” by Brandi Carlile: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8pQLtHTPaI She also recorded it with an orchestra years later (here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nd4KCFA-fHo ), and that version is gorgeous, but we went with the original because it’s shorter.
The only other major contender was “45 Years” by Stan Rogers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrGDoDloD1M
And one that I would have considered but discovered too late: “By the Way They Dance”, by Jump, Little Children. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bx8_hzie-LE
Fiancee and I have considered and either rejected or held off on a lot of songs for one reason or another (we’re picky) but here are a few of our contenders:
“Time After Time” – Nancy Wilson
“Beautiful Things” – Dr. Dolittle MST
“Sea Breeze” – UBUD (since we want to get married by the water)
“January Wedding” – The Avett Brothers (we planned to marry in January; this one got bumped when we chose an August date)
“There You Are” – Martina McBride
“The One” – Elton John (too racy for our tastes and androcentric for our needs)
We’ve been experimenting with the thought of instrumental music for our first dance, too.
Update:
We’re leaning towards “Bara no Hanayome (The Rose Bride[s])” from the stage musical version of Shoujo Kakumei Utena. It’s in Japanese, which is perfect since my Mari is Japanese; and when translated to de-contextualize it from the show, it fits us extremely well.
gf and i are planning a *very* simple wedding, but considering having a friend sing “they didn’t have you where i come from” by the dixie chicks. might be too slow to dance to, but the lyrics are stunning…would link to it if i could figure out how!!
We are thinking of using “Married Life” from the movie UP. Such a sweet little song.
“This Little Ring” by Solomon Burke
A lesser-known Otis Redding vibe.
Oh – also – “I was made for loving you” by KISS… This would probably make my man’s day.
“Stereo Hearts” by Gym Class Heroes 🙂
We’re doing Silverchair’s “My Favourite Thing”. I shared this song with FH early on in our relationship and he fell as much in love with it as I had, one of his nicknames for me is also “my favorite”.
We had a vintage vibe going at our reception, so our first dance was “All My Tomorrows” by Frank Sinatra. It still gives me chills when I hear it (and a few tears too, I won’t lie!).
“Today I may not have a thing at all except for just a dream or two
But I’ve got lots of plans for tomorrow and all my tomorrows belong to you…”
I’m going super indie myself and using a song by a friend called “Anything”. It’s not traditional, in that it’s a rap song, but the lyrics say it all for me. http://rd.io/x/QQk99zdeM6Sn/
Walking in, “nothing else matters” by Apocalyptica (Metallica’s original instrumental version). First dance is K-Ci and Jojo “all my life”
I am the maid of honor for my sister’s wedding in March and here some of the choices we narrowed down for her:
How Long Will I Love You- Ellie Goulding (Seriously gorgeous)
65 More Years- Ron Pope
Te Amo- Trevor Hall
You and Me Song- E.M.D.
Our Own Pretty Ways- First Aid Kit
Let Your Heart Hold Fast- The Fort Atlantic

I Knew This Would Be Love- Imaginary Friend ft. Kina Grannis (Perfect for couples who met online)
From LA to Rome- Chester See
Drunkard’s Prayer- Over the Rhine
So Are You To Me- eastmountainsouth
Entwined. – Jason Reeves (Also, really really beautiful)
They Bring Me To You- Joshua Radin
Everything- Rob Blackledge
Just This Good- Levi Kreis (This would be my current choice. It’s written by an openly gay Broadway actor and it’s so freaking romantic. )
Forever- Ben Harper (Most likely the song she’ll go with)
Recently discovered that are pretty:
One Day Like This- Elbow
If Everything Fell Quiet- The Reindeer Section
I Do- Susie Suh
Hold You In My Heart- With River
I Can’t Wait- Runner Runner

Forever Mine- Eric Michael
Perfect For Me- Ron Pope
Classics-
Perfect Day- Lou Reed
When I’m Sixty-Four- The Beatles ( I will use this somewhere in my wedding. I don’t even care. It’s my favorite Beatles tune ever).
You’re the Top- Bing Crosby
Come Go With Me- The Beach Boys
Phillip Phillips: Gone Gone Gone
“you’re my back bone, you’re my corner stone” and /weep
or we’re going to change and actually do the ballroom scene from Beauty and the Beast, since he will attest to it being what taught him to dance 🙂
My fiance and I are using Avenged Sevenfold’s “Warmness on the Soul.” For us it’s pretty perfect.
“I give my heart to you, I give my heart, cuz nothing can compare in this world to you.”
We are stuck in between Foo Fighters Everlong (the acoustic version) and Ben Folds Luckiest!
Fly Me to the Moon by Sinatra
This is indeed a great post. We like so many of them but Marvin Gaye’s ‘Let’s Get It On’ is our favourite!
my husband and I danced to “midnight, stars and you” by Wayne “the train” Hancock..original version of the song was played in the movie, “The Shining”..one of our favorite movies and an awesome song!!
We are leaning towards Queen’s You”re My Best Friend!!
We’re doing Book of Love- we couldn’t agree on a version, so we’re doing Peter Gabriel’s version for our first dance and Airborne Toxic Event’s version as our last.
I showed my husband the mario Kart love song. I’ve never seen a grown man cry so much.. He liked it I found the song I’m walking down the aisle to
We had our first dance to “I wanna grow old with you” by Adam Sandler, though we used the version from the musical. It was goofy and sweet which is perfectly us. It is also fairly short which was perfect for my mister, who isn’t a big dancer.
We danced our first dance to The Velvet Underground’s “I Found A Reason”
Processed together to “Sweet Thing” (only time I cried!) and Recessed to “Wouldn’t it be nice” by The Beach Boys.
We are learning a dance based on and using the song from Final Fantasy 8’s ballroom scene, 🙂 I dont think anyone invited will really get the reference though
“Under the Moonlight” by Else Creeping…sweet and romantic. Relatively obscure group do it’s not overdone
I’m torn between a few songs:
Love Song cover by 311- I like the slowness of this as opposed to The Cure’s Version
Dance Me to the End of Love in the style of The Civil Wars- I’m torn because this is actually a song about the Holocaust and it kind of changes meaning once you know that.
Tip of My Tongue by The Civil Wars
Rainy Night in Soho by The Pogues
Love You Till the End by The Pogues
Our wedding is in March 2015 and I’m about 1/4 Irish while my bf is full blooded Irish. His culture is really important to him and my Hispanic culture is going to be throughout the whole wedding so I’m leaning more towards The Pogues. We’re both huge fans.
Cute and silly, The Dead Milkmen “Punk Rock Girl”
We’re totally jacking “She Keeps Me Warm” from our photographer. We’d been wanting to find a way to use Macklemore and Lewis’ “Same Love” and couldn’t figure out quite how to do it…
We literally just stumbled upon our first song – “The Living Sisters” (you don’t know) how glad I am. it’s so lovely.
What about “we belong” by Pat Benatar?? My fiancé and I are thinking we will dance our first dance to that.
“All I Want is You” by Barry Louis Polisar is going to be our wedding march song! Always thought it would be from the first time I heard it. I kinda hate that the song is in a green bean commercial or something like that.
Our song was chosen within a couple months of dating in high school. We danced to Snow Patrol’s “Chasing Cars”… twice! It was such a nice surprise for our DJ to play it as the last song for us. It gave us a chance to really take in the whole rollercoaster ride of a day. We were surrounded by the remaining guests, and I was bawling my eyes out. It is such a sweet and beautiful song, much like the rest of Snow Patrol’s work. We will be together for 8 years (3 married, we wed on the anniversary of our first date) on July 22nd 🙂
My husby and I used “Beyond the Sea” by Bobby Darin. It’s always been one of our favorites. <3
I love this.. theres so many options out there. I walked down the isle to “Let it be” played on piano. And my first dance song was, “Crazy Girl” by Eli Young Band. Remember you guys have some country girls in the group, and theres a TON of country love songs. If they want to get a little wild, throw in some George Straight, Alabama, or even some classic bluegrass. Everyone loved it when i threw in “Little White Church” by Little big town. =)
We danced to “Blue Eyes” from the Garden State soundtrack. My husband surprised me with it. Fitting, since my eyes are actually blue (bonus). 😉 It makes me weepy every time I hear it.
“Into the mystic” by Van Morrison was our first dance song.
We are using A Thousand Years by Christina Perri. We both are completly in love with it!
I don’t think we’re having a first dance, but if we did, it would probably be The Waves at Night by Phosphorescent.
It is such a song.
*sigh* SOmeone else knows of my Type O NEgative’s Love you to Death…. I always imagined that would be my wedding song…
We decided on “Something in the way she moves” by James Taylor. It’s something that I know a lot of people have used for father daughter dance songs, but I think it works perfectly fine for a first dance song too.
Eavesdrop by The Civil Wars
Gotta Have You by The Weepies
You and I by Ingrid Michelson
Anywhere by Evanescence (I’m talking about old, old Evanescence. Not the newer stuff.)
May I by Trading Yesterday
Our firs dance will be “I Choose You” by Willie Hutch. It’s an old seventies song from “The Mack” and my friend has mixed it to segue into UGK’s “International Players Anthem.” It’s odd, but so are we.
We are having our first dance to Ellie Goulding’s cover of Your Song by Elton John… makes me happy 🙂
We had it narrowed down to two songs. Eventually we decided on the Jason Wade cover of “You Belong to Me.” I was a huge Lifehouse fan when I was younger and I heard this version on the Shrek soundtrack and kind of fell in love with it. Bonus: as a shy bride who doesn’t really dance much, it was nice and short!
And for HP/theater geeks: our other option was “Not Alone” from A Very Potter Musical. We put it in the playlist directly after our first dance so that if we wanted to, we could make it a 2-song dance. Darren Criss, who played Harry Freakin’ Potter did a solo version of it so we used that because heck yeah HP nerds!
Looking for something new? Here is a link to a song…”The One”…by former Isley Brother Chris Jasper that we recently released and the fans are saying it would be a great “wedding song”…so, check it out! Available on iTunes, Amazon, CDBaby and more!
http://www.soultracks.com/song-month-chris-jasper-one
We danced to Bruce Springsteen’s “Human Touch”.
How about Anarchy in the UK by the Sex Pistols? This is what my fiance wants for our wedding. Although we both identify as anarchists, it might be a bit odd for some of our guests.Plus I don’t dance and I am really shy. I have no problem with using the song since I think it would be entertaining but it isn’t exactly a love song, LOL
We are looking at having “One by One – by The Black Seeds” to walk down the aisle to and Bob Marley’s – Is this Love for our first dance 🙂
Here is a brand new love song “The One” that my husband Chris (formerly of The Isley Brothers) wrote and we recently put out…it is the perfect wedding song.

Have to also say “this old love” by Lior, heard it at a few weddings now, and it’s so lovely. And my favourite, INXS never tear us apart. My partner and I both love INXS and we always sing along when we hear this one, even in the supermarket.
One that also has popped up is “When you walk in the room” by Fyfe Dangerfield
Listen to the recently released song “The One” by Chris Jasper (formerly Isley Brothers who wrote “For The Love of You”) for the perfect wedding song? Here are some of the words:
“Hello my love, there is something I want to say, you’re that once, once in a lifetime love, here with me today. You’re the one that I love, faithfully, faithfully…You say that you love me, and I know it comes straight from your heart, tell me over, and over and over again, we will never part. That Ben Folds song always makes me cry the second I hear it. Not sure I could get through a whole dance!
Also, the civil wars “C’est La Mort” (yes it means such is death, but the song is love noir- it’s ok if you leave this earth, just don’t got without me, I kinda like the dark undertone though it’s meant lovingly) and their version of “dance me to the end of love” both are beautiful! 🙂
Thanks for this list! Some great ideas–my fiancee isn’t really into music, so I’ve been tasked with this one. If you’re interested, though, we’re thinking about either Sarah Harmer’s “Open Window (The Wedding Song)”, or if I can find a stripped down version of it, Garbage’s “The World Is Not Enough”. (An acoustic version of When In Rome’s “The Promise” might also make the cut…)
This list made me really happy. My fiancé’s and my song is “Love You to Death” by Type O Negative. I was worried about using it because I was worried about “offending” some of my older, more conservative relatives, but this reassures me that it’s fine and a song that means that much to us really is the only appropriate choice.
We ultimately picked “Together” by The Raconteurs. Nice pace for twirling while maintaining a series of slow dance moves.
My fiance and I picked Running by No Doubt.
We used the George Harrison cover of “Between the Devil and The Deep Blue Sea” …. it really summed up our very tumultuous relationship leading up to our marriage (smooth sailing since)… We broke up so many times but just like the song … we kept “running back for more”… anyway we were so happy with the song choice… and we’re HUGE George Harrison fans so that was a plus! I also wanted to say, unconventional though it may be… I think “No Children” is maybe one of the best love songs ever!
