I fuh-reaking love Lord of the Rings. I also love making racists mad. So when the new Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power came out on Amazon Prime and a ton of people were booty butt hurt that there were BIPOC folks in the cast, I almost died and went to Valinor (that's like Elven heaven, for those of you who don't know!).
It tickles me to know that some folks will suspend their disbelief for a fantasy show about ELVES and DRAGONS… but somehow seeing Black and Brown characters on screen is unrealistic?!
Similar to mainstream wedding media, the entertainment industry is severely lacking when it comes to featuring diverse and inclusive representation on screen. Many BIPOC folks who grew up loving fantasy never saw characters who looked like them. We were always made to feel these magical worlds were meant for white people, and that we would never be welcome. Additionally, for BIPOC soonlyweds who are looking for Lord of the Rings wedding inspiration, it's often hard to find real weddings that don't feature white couples.
Well, guess what?! BIPOC folks have infiltrated Middle Earth, and we're here to stay! In celebration of our new favorite TV show and this big step for diversity and inclusion in fantasy, we're showcasing a few of our favorite Lord of the Rings inspired weddings featuring BIPOC newlyweds. As Marian Wright Edelman said, “You can't be what you can't see.”
For my fellow BIPOC fantasy lovers, if you're planning a Lord of the Rings wedding or are looking to see yourselves in some fantasy or nerdy weddings, this one's for you.
Let's see some Lord of the Rings weddings featuring BIPOC newlyweds!
We're getting Rivendell in winter vibes from this Lord of the Rings wedding.
Now let's obsess over this Lord of the Rings-inspired wedding by the beach.
The couple on the beach at Black Sands, it was Halloween-esque, BUT she wore her “One Ring” and an Elven crown and a faire styled black dress. The officiant Helga Stewart wore an amazing mixed head piece of florals and feathers. I personally designed the “shield” floral arrangement and didn't even know her theme when I arrived for the shoot. The shield was PERFECT for her.
