Our offbeat wedding at a glance:

For us this day was a LONG time in the making. Rob and I have had a crazy, fun, and caring relationship from the very beginning and of course our wedding had those same traits. We met when we were about thirteen years old and have been in each other’s lives in one way or the other ever since, and all it took was me kicking him out of a play house window! Our lives diverged when he went into the Army and I entered into my “practice” marriage, but by the time he was out and my marriage was at its end point, we reconnected.

With both of us having chronic/incurable diseases, it has helped put a focus on living in the moment and loving each other with that same intensity. Every day being a battle with our bodies and what could come, we knew that we wanted to be in each other’s lives for good, so why not just make it official?

Combining my love of nature with Rob’s desire to explore, we decided to secretly elope in downtown Annapolis, Maryland. We knew that a big marriage wasn’t for us. This being my second wedding and his first, we wanted to focus on just being the most authentic versions of us — me in my crown of flowers and bone necklace and him rocking his faux-hawk and flower tie.

We took a chance by not inviting family and friends and honestly, we were both happier with the outcome of the day. By eloping, we were able to tell everyone in our own time, with no real obligations on who to invite versus not, and most of all, we got to do the day our way without interference or guilt from anyone.

What was your most important lesson learned?

For me the most important lesson I learned was to enjoy the moments shared with your partner. No matter how small or large you plan a wedding, it can get stressful. Between paperwork, money, and even just finding a dress, it felt crazy and hectic. I was sent on travel for work literally the week before we planned to get married and I still didn’t have a dress. He didn’t have his things together and I wasn’t home to help coordinate the day, but it all fell into place. It isn’t about all the pretty things (even though those are nice), it’s about the love shared and the words spoken. Keep calm and remember it all works out.

  1. I truly love that they had a budget of $1,000 and it looked like they had the day of their dreams! That shows the true statement of their love for each other – the wedding doesn’t matter.
