Our offbeat wedding at a glance:
From the beginning of wedding planning, we both knew we just really wanted our wedding to be fun, to be a memorable party for us and our guests, and not be a drawn-out, boring affair. We wanted the whole day to just be a fun atmosphere and to fit our personalities and the things we loved. We included a beer unity ceremony, custom vows, a cake made by friends, and Futurama references slipped in whenever possible!
Tell us about the ceremony:
We wanted a ceremony that was us committing to one another in front of our family and friends, but not a staunchly traditional script, so we co-wrote our own fun, more personalized script. We included personal stories of matching Halloween costumes, binge watching Futurama, custom “promises” to one another, and a beer unity ceremony.
Our ceremony included laughter and sweet personal moments, especially since we had asked Collin's uncle to perform the ceremony, which he got ordained just to do. Collin walked down the aisle to Kansas' “Carry On Wayward Son” and I walked out to The Beatles “All You Need is Love.”
Tell us about your reception:
Our goal was to have a fun party, and our reception was just that. We did the traditional first dance and bouquet and garter tosses early on so that guests could eat, drink, dance, and hop in the photobooth for the majority of the evening.
We had a dinner buffet, while my mother, maid of honor, and the best man gave speeches toasting us in celebration. We then moved right into the cake cutting, which some of our close friends had baked for us as a wedding gift (complete with Fry & Leela cake topper!). Music and dancing started right after dinner, with the party going well into the night. When guests needed a dancing break, we had a photobooth with Futurama backdrops, Cards Against Humanity at each table, and we asked guests to sign a Fry and Leela framed print as our guestbook.
What was your most important lesson learned?
To let people help you! When wedding planning first started, people would ask how they could help and my auto-response was, “it's OK, we don't need anything.” Boy, was I wrong. When we actually started taking people up on their offers to help we realized things went smoother, it took stress away from us, and in the end those things made or contributed by other people are some of the most important details we'll remember of our wedding. Friends and family printed our save-the-dates at home, did my hair/makeup, baked our cake and cupcakes, and did the majority of the ceremony decor set up.
