We know our Offbeat Wed vendors are absolute superheroes. Case in point, Emily of Emily Berg Weddings. Emily was sharing with us how she is down for anything when it comes to weddings. When we asked for an example, she told us how she helped Johanna and Brian plan an eco-friendly wedding with superhero themes at a national park…All in FOUR MONTHS. And wait till you find out what Johanna's wedding dress was made of!
We'll let Emily describe this sustainable wedding to you in detail.
The assignment: Local northeast Ohio flavor. An organic and sustainable wedding. Lots of kids involved. Supporting women/BIPOC/LGBTQ+/disabled-owned businesses. COVID-aware. Interfaith. All outside, at Cuyahoga Valley National Park, in Ohio, in May. Superhero themed. 4 months to pull it off.
Challenging, to be sure, but SO fun! We were able to perfectly blend the different aspects of who they are – comic book superhero fans, lovers of natural beauty, unwavering in their pursuit of justice for their community – not only into a cohesive design, but a really great party that communicated who Johanna and Brian are.
Let's see how Emily helped pull off the eco-friendly wedding!
The couple used local Ohio gemstones as part of their eco-friendly wedding jewelry.
Sustainable wedding tip: use your state park as a wedding venue!
We love how Johanna and Brian commissioned a local LGBTQ+ woman-opened carpentry business to build their chuppah.
And had an Interfaith ceremony with Jewish and Christian officiants!
This sustainable wedding used local flowers in foam-free arrangements from a small farmer florist.
But actually we're obsessed with how the floral colors match the superhero theme at this eco-friendly wedding.
Recycled comic book paper flowers were also a must have at this sustainable wedding.
Ok ready to see Johanna's sustainable wedding dress?
This eco-friendly wedding gown was made by Leanne Marshall using the designer's remnant material!
This sustainable wedding had farm-to-table catering and compostable bar cups!
Idea for an eco-friendly wedding: fair trade wraps for chilly guests.
I always feel honored when a couple entrusts such a momentous day to me, but as they told me about themselves and their story, I remember thinking, They do so much for so many people (church ministry; foster care; LGBTQ+ advocacy; justice education; refugee relief). I wanted to help them have a fabulous day that’s a gift to them.
