The offbeat bride: Becki, wilderness Camp Director

Location & date of wedding: Dubois, Wyoming — September 19, 2009
What made our wedding offbeat: First of all, we asked our friends and family to only give us rocks for gifts. Our intention was to use the harvested rocks to create our first trail together. Also, our wedding cake was a rock cairn. 
We grew all our own vegetables for the reception. Then we made our bouquets out of what remained in the garden. During our ceremony we planted a family tree with dirt from Pennsylvania, Kansas and Wyoming.
Running a summer camp can be very hectic, especially when summer camp is in session. So, we had to write the entire ceremony during the rare moments that our paths actually crossed during the summer.
We had a hike and fish the day before our wedding. That brought over forty people into the Wyoming Wilderness. Then on the eve of the wedding, we hosted a Kick-Off Ball and Bonfire, which was super fun. Then, on the morning of the wedding, we had a Tie the Knot Trot 5K and Wind River Walk. We gave shirts to the 130+ people that participated in the run.
Tell us about the ceremony: Our ceremony included a reading from my brother, who was expecting a baby the next day, so it was broadcast over the iPod. Then we had a reading from my younger brother (who was actually there!).
The best cover EVER, by Bridget Matros of Anniversary Song by Cowboy Junkies, wailed as all of our siblings scooped dirt from our states to plant our family tree. 
Our officiant (who is also our boss) shared the story of how we met and came to be, as a couple. Afterwards, we shared the vows that we wrote together. Jeremy's people performed our recessional song “From Here On In.”
We had a moment during the ceremony for everyone to bless his rock. We then recessed along the pathway that had been created by the rocks that our friends and family had brought and blessed. It was incredible!
Our biggest challenge: The two of us do not share a single day off together from mid-May until mid-September. Basically, there was adequate pressure for us to “get-it-together” in our spare moments. It was a fun focus actually!
My favorite moment: It was incredible to see everyone. We also enjoyed spending so much time with everyone who was able to travel to our small corner of Wyoming.
My advice for offbeat brides: Our wedding planning went like this: What would we like to do if our wedding day was just us… nobody else involved?
Then after we envisioned our perfect weekend together, we found ways that we could involve everyone else in it.
All activities were optional, and there were many to choose from.
What was the most important lesson you learned from your wedding? It is supposed to be one of the most amazing days of your life. Let it be.
