A Viking Halloween wedding ceremony script with a weapons exchange

Posted by

If you haven't seen Kirsten and Tim's nonbinary gothic Viking wedding, what are you doing fam? But since you're already here, we're excited to share their Halloween wedding ceremony script. This script probably mentions all of our favorite things: Halloween, Norse and Viking wedding traditions, and medieval weapons of course. The couple even incorporated their love for Dungeons and Dragons by using a 20-sided die to choose who would read their vows first! Whether you're having a spooky-themed wedding or a Viking wedding, this Halloween wedding ceremony script will cover all your bases.

We love how Kirsten described their vision for the wedding:

Our “vision” for the ceremony was that we were all returning from battle, holding our weapons, and we decided to get married in a local tavern. Our friend Lauren Boone who was was the officiant poured everyone drinks as folks were walking down the aisle.

Let's get into this Halloween wedding ceremony script:

Introduction

Welcome to HALLOWEDDING…Let’s get this party started! To all of you spirits, beings, witches and all glorious creatures sitting before me today, thank you for coming to celebrate the magic that is right here, right now, in the form of Kirsten and Tim. We’re all here today, in this enchanting and majestic place, because we love these two beautiful people and are inspired by not only their love, but all that they have accomplished as partners.

A warning: I can’t assure you that any cold hearts won’t melt, that enemies won’t turn to lovers, or that an overwhelmingly and possibly uncomfortable amount of joy might wash over you today – so please be careful out there.

There are a lot of people who have much to say about love. However in my search, I found something written by poet Pablo Neruda that struck so true with me, and is perfect for the two of you:

“I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where. I love you simply, without problems or pride: I love you in this way because I do not know any other way of loving but this, in which there is no I or you, so intimate that your hand upon my chest is my hand, so intimate that when I fall asleep your eyes close.”

Now, Kirsten, will you please roll for persuasion?

Vow Exchange

Officiant hands them their vows. Who goes first is decided by the roll of a dice.

Ring Exchange

Today we’re doing more than just an exchanging of rings. Tim and Kirsten will also be exchanging weapons. In traditional Norse and Viking weddings, partners would exchange swords as well. The symbolism behind this is an exchange of protection—two families joining as one to forever support and protect each other. Just so everyone is clear, we still fully expect each family to raise arms and charge into battle for each other, so starting now, please be prepared for that at all times until the end of time.

It’s about to get official. Kirsten and Tim, please place the rings on your weapons, and hold them steady while I lead you through your ring exchange with the promises you’ve written for each other.

Kirsten, repeat after me.

Tim, I give you this ring.
With this ring, I give you my love and my loyalty,
With this ring, I promise to protect you from evil spirits,
With this ring, I promise to ride into battle for you, for the rest
of our lives, and beyond.

Tim, please repeat after me.

Kirsten, I give you this ring.
With this ring, I choose you as my family.
With this ring, I accept you wholly as you are,
And who you will grow into.
With this ring, and with you, every night will be Halloween.

Kirsten and Tim sheath their weapons.

Declaration of Intent

Do you, Kirsten, take Tim as your partner in life and marriage, and promise to give your unwavering love, encouragement, respect, and protection in every way, through all adventures to come, as long as your souls roam this earth and beyond?

Do you, Tim, take Kirsten as your partner in life and marriage, and promise to give your unwavering love, encouragement, respect, and protection in every way, through all adventures to cone, as long as your souls roam this earth and beyond?

Pronunciation

Mary Shelley wrote, “We will be monsters, alone in the world, but we will have each other.” So in honor of two of the most magnificent creatures in this universe, it is my great honor to pronounce you partners for life. LET’S “I DO” THIS THING.
