How I cater to offbeat weddings

The idea of working in the wedding industry used to be laughable to me. I didn’t start out with this big dream of shooting weddings, but instead got overly anxious even attending them. As a closeted 20-something, I couldn’t see myself in these big, traditional wedding days. I felt alienated by the industry and scared I would never find my place. I didn’t think I’d ever get married, especially because I couldn’t even admit to myself that dammit, I liked girls.

So when I came out years later and started working in the wedding industry, I knew it wasn’t made for LGBTQ+ folks like myself. The wedding industry has been labeled as the most heteronormative industry in the world, and it’s apparent as you navigate through it. And the traditional nature of the wedding industry isn’t just off-putting for LGBTQ+ couples, but any couple that imagines their day anything more than cookie cutter.

But that doesn’t mean it has to stay this way. I’m determined to provide representation for everyone in this industry that tends to be so strict on how you look and who you love.

I found my passion in telling your stories through photography. Your story that’s untraditional, offbeat, and absolutely beautiful. I aim to create an experience that welcomes and celebrates everyone from marginalized communities, whether they’re the ones getting married or a beloved guest.

Within my business, this goal impacts everything I do – from inclusive contracts to gender neutral posing to guides offering alternatives to every stage of your wedding day. I want to make sure you feel your love is not only accepted, but celebrated.

I use a combination of film and digital to tell your story, prioritizing documentary style to allow you to enjoy your day in the way most authentic to you.

Her attention to detail, her care for us and of us... perfect is not enough. We felt so held and nurtured by Kara's whole team but especially Kara. Thank you, thank you, thank you for this beautiful artwork from our special day, Kara is truly an artist. - Alex & Kyla
