The offbeat bride: Christa – customer service representative
Her offbeat partner: Christopher – student
Location & date of wedding: Scarborough Renaissance Festival Waxahachie, TX — May 17, 2009
What made our wedding offbeat: We went period Renaissance and did it at the faire in Waxahachie.
I'm a seamstress and I made the bridesmaid dresses by hand and did a lot of work on my own to make it what I wanted.
We made all the mailings and decorations ourselves personalized towards my Celtic heritage and our favorite colors (orange and brown) even though it was a spring wedding.
We had our cake made to a Dungeons and Dragons theme because we're both gamers. Chris's toy colossal dragon, Brutus, was incorporated into the cake and we couldn't help but giggle every time we looked at it.
The country dancers came to our wedding to perform and show the guests how to do country style renaissance dances. Usually the court dancers do weddings, but we like the rowdy crowd!
Our biggest challenge: There are very few people who have or know how to put together a Renaissance wedding because it's a small niche. I had no one to ask when I had questions, but improvisation is always good. If you can't find an answer, just do what you like! Also, at a venue like this it's imperative you have an exact head count. That's pretty much impossible unless the wedding is small, so try to be flexible and be ready for last minute changes in plans.
My favorite moment: My friend Sarah had to carry my veil and train because it rained the night before and she got the veil caught on the rose bushes. It was hilarious.
Also, we had our hearts set on the processional being “The Blood Of Cu Chulainn” from The Boondock Saints, but the sheet music had never been released. I contacted the composers and they released it to the public so we could use it in our wedding. Their kindness blew my mind and we can't thank them enough.
Chris's favorite moment of the wedding was watching me ping pong around the reception pavilion talking to guests and giving out hugs. We had a big line!
Care to share a few vendor/shopping links?
- Cake: Renaissance Productions. We had a Dungeons and Dragons themed wedding cake because we're gamers and they blew it out of the water! It was amazing and delicious!
- Venue: Scarborough Renaissance Festival in Waxahachie, TX. They get a little swamped sometimes and it might take a little bit for them to get back to you, but they are friendly and we had a great time.
- Website and online RSVP system: E-Wedding.com. It's fantastic, easy to use and pretty affordable! Here's our website and all our pictures!
- Flowers: Flowers By Design. They're creative and willing to work with whatever ideas you have. I've known them since I was little and they're wonderful.
Enough talk — show me the wedding inspo!

Comments on Christa & Christopher’s Renaissance garden wedding
Delightful! The venue is lovely, the cake is blowing my nerdy little mind and it looks like everyone had a lot of fun!
Thank you. 🙂 The cake was all Victoria and Jeff’s ideas at Renaissance Productions. They’re really creative. We just added a couple of little touches.
The Blood Of Cu Chulainn is an amazing song!!!
We also put it as the song that plays on our website. I think you have to have quicktime on your computer for it to play though. The controls are on the bar at the bottom of the page.
Omg! You have incredibly gifted hands to have made those outfits! You all look so beautiful and eveyone there looks like they were having a blast! 🙂 congratulations albeit belatedly! I wanna see moaaar! Wow wow wow!
Thank you. I have a lot of the best pictures on the flickr account. I have almost all of the pictures on the website too.
I absolutely love the idea of a RenFest wedding and it looks like yours was executed with class and style! I think that picture of the bride and groom being held back by their respective wedding parties is just so adorable for some reason. I loove this wedding! Congrats!!
Thank you. 🙂 Lol, that’s our favorite picture too.
Heck yes, a DnD wedding! Congratulations! I wanted to have a ren-fest wedding, but decided to have an elven/faye wedding elsewhere… the Carolinas offer a lot of outdoor venues, im sure we’ll find the perfect one
ANYWAYS… i LOVED the DnD cake! That made my day 😀
Thank you. Congratulations to you as well, I hope you find the perfect place. 🙂
I love your wedding! My fiance and I want to also have our wedding at Scarborough. However, I am a little worried and hopefully you could answer some questions…
Does it get hot enough to met chocolate? (we want to have chocolate party favors, but are not sure) and what did you and your guest do after the reception?
