When her florist went out of business just before the wedding, Lily decided to do all her own decor. We had guests from as far apart as Japan, California, and Germany. We tried to invoke all the things we loved in our wedding day — geeky nods to Harry Potter, His Dark Materials, Jonathan Coulton, and the Lord of the Rings; the Obergefell v Hodges ruling for Jess's career and theatrical touches for mine. We asked our guests to wear 'whatever makes you feel pretty.' We then celebrated with ice cream, lawn games, and street food, and ended the evening with a ceilidh and session. Oh, and there was an owl, and llamas.

I decided early on I wanted to be a mystical fairy goddess for the wedding. We are both nerds, so there were many "easter eggs" hidden in parts of our wedding for people to find, from "game over" music at the end of the night to messages hidden in binary code on our save-the-dates. We are both feminists, so it was also very important to leave behind the more traditional, patriarchal, gender-specific parts of American weddings. Don’t miss the flower crowns on BOTH of them!

Harry Potter has been interwoven into our relationship for 20 years, so we had subtle hints of our love for the series in our decor (side note: we got engaged at and shot our engagement photos at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter). We made our reception personal by including all the things we love: coffee, beer, tattoos, and tarot!
