Our offbeat wedding at a glance:
I've been working in the wedding industry for about 10 years, so I knew when it was my turn to get married, I was going to do things my way. I've seen to many brides cry and stress over the years about the smallest details and would think, is that all worth it?
My now-husband is super laid-back so let me take total control over the planning. I didn't want a traditional wedding with the long ceremony, awkward garter toss, an inevitable dry chicken dinner so I picked my three favourite topics and went from there. Location, photographer, and dress. Everything else would just fall into place.
Within hours of us being engaged, I knew I wanted to get married in mountains with my closest friends and family there to celebrate with us. So that's exactly what we did. We picked a hotel in Banff, and a local photographer who knew all the cool spots to get the best pics. I had been selling wedding dresses for four years so being in the industry I was very picky. I knew I wanted a dress with lots of colour and floral print, and after much searching I found the most amazing gown by Romona Keveza. It had huge green leaves, purple hydrangeas, and radishes (yes you read that right — radishes!). I based my colour palette on the dress, having flowers match the floral print, white decor, and of course, adding radishes to my cake and flowers. We had a fast ceremony, followed by five hours of us frolicking in the mountains with our photographer, back for a quick dinner, then went to a local nightclub to rage.
Tell us about the ceremony:
I'm really not into wedding ceremonies but super into the pictures so we had it outside on the balcony of our hotel overlooking the mountains. I had my sister as my maid of honor and Justin's brother as his best man because we weren't into wedding parties. Our dogther (that's dog daughter) Noodles was our flower girl.
The ceremony was short and sweet with a few jokes and personalized vows. Fun fact, my Baba wore the exact same outfit and hat that she wore to my parents wedding 26 years prior to ours.
Tell us about your reception:
We had our reception at the hotel, and after dinner and cake, we and our friends went into town to rage at the local nightclub. My girlfriends and I have been going there for years so it was the obvious place to party with everyone and scream all the lyrics to Justin Bieber's “Sorry.”
The best part was when my father-in-law showed up at the club, took shots with us, and danced with the Sasquatch mascot. When we got kicked out of the bar after last call, we stumbled next door to McDonald's and I bought 100 chicken nuggets and went around giving them to people like a nugget fairy. 10 on 10 would do again.
What was your most important lesson learned?
My advice to other couples is to not sweat the small stuff and just do you boo-boo. You don't want to wear a traditional wedding gown? Don't do it. You wanna ride in on a white horse. Do it. You want to have underwater ceremony in the middle of the ocean followed by a Star Wars-themed dinner wearing storm trooper costumes? Definitely do that. Don't let other people pressure you into trying to do something that does fit you style or vibe. You have one day so make it yours and don't have any regrets!
