Marta and Christine celebrated their wedding with an intimate gathering of friends and family at Camp Blodgett on Lake Michigan. The day was characterized by opposites coming together: boho meets Ikea, with fun color details and a simple, modern look. Planners fox + fern events incorporated their personalities with the comfy blankets on the beach and the wildflower arch against the lake. Wildflowers with splashes of gold throughout brought it all together for complete feeling of relaxation and romance.
Marta specifically requested something “science-y,” so they added some glass beakers among the bud vases on guest tables. Christine wanted to make sure to carry through the geometric details with guest favors, so they incorporated himmili airplant holders into the centerpiece design for their friends and family to take home at the end of the evening.
The ceremony revolved around Dr. Seuss’s “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” and was written by Marta and Christine. Instead of a first dance, they led their their guests in a sing-along. Christine began the first verse of “You and I” by Ingrid Michaelson and when Marta began the second verse, the room exploded. By the end of the song, everyone was singing, stomping, and clapping. After dinner, there was a trivia game about the couple, and treats from Love’s Ice Cream.

I always knew I wanted to get married on the water, and while that water had always been the ocean in my mind, once we moved to Detroit, we fell in love with Lake Michigan. Many of the adventures we think up start with “where can we take the dogs?,” so our first road trip to the west side was to Kirk Park, an amazing off-leash dog beach less than two miles from our venue on Lake Michigan. We have come back multiple times since, and have made great memories here. Being that our initial wedding venue search started in Traverse City, it was just by accident that we stumbled on Camp Blodgett that had been right under our noses!
Vibe-wise, it was important for us to have a wedding that felt special and well-planned, but not stuffy. We have moved three times in our six years together, from Connecticut to Oklahoma, to Little Rock, and now Detroit, so we have made lots of wonderful friends but this would be the first time they would all come together and meet. The WORST is when you're a guest at someone's wedding, sitting at an assigned table of 8 or 10, and the only person you know is your date, so you really have to struggle sometimes through the small talk. We hoped the trivia game would really break the ice and give our families, plus people who have known us from the beginning, and through various moves, the chance to share their experiences with us with each other. I think it worked and people had a lot of fun laughing with and at us.
