Real Weddings: Canada

Although we’re based in the United States, we feature a TON of Canadian weddings, especially Toronto and BC. Could it be because we’re no-so-secretly jealous of the less traditional wedding trends of our cousins to the north? Yes it could. Submit your wedding for consideration via offbeatwed.com/submissions.

Bethany & Shawn’s geeky retro aviation museum wedding

Let me just leave this here: Adventure Time cake, custom manga shoes, retro pin-up style, and a killer aviation museum venue. We can’t even get over the CAKE! You have to see it. Plus, all the awesome group shots in the museum and the sweet kissy-face shots. And let’s not forget the whispered naughty secrets during the portrait session in the comic book store!

Jesse & Ben’s potluck backyard hippie handfasting

When you’re in the mood to kick tradition out, this is the celebration to see: a non-legal backyard solstice potluck with a VERY participatory ceremony, personal tattoos instead of rings, and a super sweet memorial for the groom’s father. These adorable hippies knew what they wanted and embraced it full-on. And we get to see it all come together!

Gloria & Robert’s harmonious wedding of Korean-Canadian traditions

This is a culture clash we LOVE: Western-style table settings with origami cranes as decorations, the bride’s mother-in-law walking down the aisle in her dress alongside her mother in her traditional Korean hanbok, and a bar serving both Canadian beer and Korean soju liquor. We’ve also got two ceremonies (including a tea ceremony), two dresses, and two genres of food. We are twice as down for this wedding.

Candace & Colin’s music-meets-geeky budget Mennonite wedding

The bride was into craftts and music and the groom was a gamer geek — what else was there to do but combine it all into one awesome day? The only problem was a small budget. It’s a good thing these two know how to throw a self-catered bash with cold munchies and a giant sweets table. Oh, and the bride’s mom being talented enough to make a fab wedding dress sure didn’t hurt, either.
