Jennifer and Rick’s evening ceremony shows exactly why this works. By ditching the flowers, they transformed their walk down the aisle into something that felt deeply mystical. Here is why you might want to light a match instead of hiring a florist.

The Lighting is Universally Flattering

There is a reason why high-end restaurants and spas rely on low light. Candlelight is soft, warm, and softens every edge. When your bridesmaids carry candles in bell-shaped holders, they aren’t just carrying an accessory; they are carrying their own personal lighting rigs. This glow makes for incredible photography and creates an immediate sense of intimacy that bright, overhead lights or daylight ceremonies can't replicate.

It Engages the Guests

One of the coolest ways to use this idea is to involve the entire crowd. In the images from Jennifer and Rick’s wedding, you can see that the guests were all given small candles of their own. This shifts the vibe from a passive audience watching a show to a collective experience where everyone is contributing to the atmosphere of the room.

It’s a Multi-Sensory Experience

While flowers offer scent, candles offer a specific kind of quiet movement. The dancing flames provide a visual rhythm that feels alive. If you choose a subtle, signature scent for the candles, you’re also creating a powerful sensory memory link for your guests. Every time they smell that specific woodsmoke or amber note in the future, they’ll be transported back to your ceremony.

Practical Logistics to Consider

If you’re ready to trade petals for wax, keep a few things in mind to ensure the only thing on fire is the romance:

  • Venue Rules: Some historic venues or those with strict fire codes might require LED flames. Modern flameless candles have come a long way and can still provide that flickering warmth without the risk.
  • The Drip Factor: If you go with real wax, ensure your holders are designed to catch drips. No one wants hot wax on their formalwear. Bell-shaped glass holders like the ones pictured are great for shielding the flame from drafts while protecting hands.
  • The Wind: If you’re outdoors, glass hurricanes or deep lanterns are non-negotiable to keep the “light” in “candlelight.”

Don't want to have flowers? Maybe candles are the way to go. Check out Jennifer and Rick's candlelit wedding for more photos of the ceremony.

Whether you’re aiming for a gothic cathedral vibe or a cozy backyard gathering, candles are a budget-friendly, high-drama way to light up your walk toward your favorite person.

  1. Our ceremony is going to be in a historic church so that means no open flames, however I have noticed that there are some craft stores with LED pillar “candles”. I’m going to look into them.

  2. This is a wonderful idea. But if photos are important to you, check with your photographer to make sure you have enough light to snap good pictures. Moar candles! 🙂

  3. I actually went to a wedding like this back in May 2007, and it was quite lovely with all the candles lining the pews and brightening up the otherwise dim sanctuary. The only exception was that the brideswomen and guests didn’t hold any candles at all. Still, I say this is an excellent idea for evening weddings.

  4. Congrats! That is the prettiest brooch bouquet I have seen, love it!
