Halloween is my absolute favorite holiday and has always been close to my heart. Although I did not grow up with a heritage that embraces Dia de Los Muertos, I always felt like Halloween is truly a day when the veil between this world and the next is its thinnest. This means that of course I'm planning a Halloween wedding!

I also believe in eternal marriage — that is that a marriage can bind two souls for eternity, instead of “til death.” I really wanted this believe to be a part of Halloween wedding.

While my husband is atheist, and I currently don't identify with a specific religion, my husband was willing to let me create a Halloween wedding ceremony script that would include some spiritual undertones… but not too many. I want to respect my husband's beliefs (or lack there of) while also reflecting some of mine. I wanted our Halloween wedding ceremony to be a collaboration, just like our marriage!

Thankfully, our wedding officiant was open to me writing the Halloween wedding ceremony script that he would use at our wedding. I let him know that I wanted the ceremony to be short and sweet and not very drawn out, so I wanted my wedding script to feel short, sweet, and to the point.

After doing some research online about wedding ceremony scripts (I found so many great ceremony examples and templates in the Offbeat Wed archives!), I got down to writing…

Here is the short Halloween wedding ceremony script I came up with:

Officiant: Family and friends have come together on this holiday to celebrate and bless the marriage of [Partner 1] and [Partner 2].

According to Celtic tradition, the veil between this world and the next is thinnest on Halloween night. This makes tonight the perfect time to join two souls in matrimony lasting not only this life but the next.

Beauty and youth fade away, money comes and goes, but your love is irreplaceable. Love is eternal. [Partner 2] and [Partner 1], keep that in mind as you make these eternal vows.

Please present the rings which represent your eternal bind.

[Best man hands rings to [Partner 1]. Each hold the rings.]

[Partner 1], place the ring on [Partner 2] and repeat after me.

“As this ring encircles your finger from this day forward,
year in and year out,
so will my love forever encircle you.
Wear this ring as a symbol of this love.”

[Partner 2], place the ring on [Partner 1] and repeat after me.

“As this ring encircles your finger from this day forward,
year in and year out,
so will my love forever encircle you.
Wear this ring as a symbol of this love.”

[Partner 1], do you take [Partner 2] as yours and yourself as hers from this day until the end of days?

[Partner 1]: I do.

Officiant: [Partner 2], do you take [Partner 1] as yours and yourself as his from this day until the end of days?

[Partner 2]: I do.

Officiant: Family and friends, I now ask you to repeat after me. “We now pronounce you husband and wife!”

Family and friends: We now pronounce you husband and wife!

Officiant: I now pronounce you Mr. and Mrs. [Last Name]! With my blessing and the blessings of your family and friends, [Partner 1], you may now kiss [Partner 2]!
