Rainy redwoods and tons of DIY at this Wes Anderson-themed wedding

The first thing to know about this wedding is that it rained. Not just any rain. It poured. And of course, it was an outdoor wedding in a redwood grove only accessible by an antique steam train. So there was no Plan B. But thankfully for us, everyone put on their galoshes and headed out to get Karen and Austin married.

But just wait, there's more. The reception was Wes Anderson-themed(!) and Karen pretty much DIYed the whole thing. She made individual cardboard dioramas based on Wes Anderson films for each reception table!

Being huge fans of Wes Anderson films, we decided on the aesthetic of his films that reflect the hopeless romantic whimsy in our lives.

Austin has always been enthralled with trains, so it seemed only fitting to have our wedding at Roaring Camp Railroads in Felton, California, where a steam train would take our guests up to Bear Mountain, where our ceremony would take place in a Redwood Cathedral Grove.

On the day of our wedding, we created a playlist of music from our favorite films to set the backdrop to the foggy, rainy, train ride up the mountain. It feel extremely surreal, like something straight out of a Wes Anderson film.

We DIYed almost everything from scratch, from the invitations, to the place cards, to the centerpieces, to the mini wooden clip boards for guests to leave us messages on, to the suitcase that cards were left in (to make sure it was a good replica of the suitcase from Darjeeling Limited). We either replicated or obtained replica props from various Wes Anderson movies or integrated the Wes Anderson aesthetic into our ideas. This meant commissioning several artists to collaborate. I felt really proud being able to showcase some of our favorite artists' work in collaboration with ours.
