Wedding vendor scams are circulating again (here’s how to spot them)

Every few months the wedding industry gets another wave of scam inquiries. They show up looking like totally normal leads at first: A wedding date, a polite message, maybe a vague reference to where they found you… and then things get weird.

A vendor in the Offbeat Wed vendor community forwarded me an example message this week, from someone who claimed to have found them through Offbeat Wed. Within a few messages the sender was pushing hard for a Zoom call and asking for direct contact info.

Classic scam behavior!

Let's be clear: this kind of scam isn’t unique to Offbeat Wed. Scammers regularly scrape business directories across the internet and send the same template message to dozens or hundreds of businesses at once.

Here’s what the initial message looked like:

Subject: Saw you in the Offbeat Wed Vendor Guide

Hi Amandamatildaphotography
My wedding is scheduled for 04/26/2026, and I'm currently looking for a good professional photographer for our special day. I'd love to check your available for that date.

Could you please share your direct email and phone number so that we can communicate more efficiently? I'm also available for a Zoom call at your earliest convienience.

At first glance this reads like a normal inquiry. But experienced vendors will immediately notice a few odd details.

Common red flags in wedding vendor scam inquiries

Generic greeting

Real couples almost always address you by name. Scam messages often use your business name or something like “Hello Photographer” because the message was automatically generated.

Minimal wedding details

Most real inquiries include at least a little context: venue, location, guest count, or how they found you. Scam messages tend to include nothing except a date.

Pushing you off your normal inquiry system

A classic tactic is trying to move the conversation immediately to another channel. They may ask for your direct email, phone number, or a Zoom call before answering any questions.

Pressure to pay quickly

Some scams escalate quickly into payment requests or overpayment scams. Others are trying to get access to your Zoom or email account through phishing links. Either way, urgency is the point.

Strange grammar or formatting

Not every typo means a scam. But messages that feel copy-pasted or oddly structured are worth a second look.

How to handle suspicious inquiries

If something feels off, you don’t have to ghost the message immediately. A simple response asking for more details will often reveal the scam quickly.

For example: “Thanks for reaching out. Can you tell me the venue and city for the wedding?”

Scammers rarely reply with real information. They either disappear or repeat the same template message.

You can also protect yourself by:

  • keeping communication inside your normal inquiry system
  • avoiding unfamiliar links
  • never accepting unexpected payments
  • requiring contracts before booking

Why this happens

Directories like Offbeat Wed are public, and that visibility is the entire point! We love it when couples can find vendors easily! Unfortunately, it also means spammers and scammers can see those listings too. The good news is that experienced vendors usually spot these messages within a couple emails.

Amanda summed it up perfectly when she reported the scammy email she'd received: “I don't blame you at all! In fact it's kind of a good sign… The listing is getting attention!”

Fair point, even if it's maybe not the kind of attention you might be looking for… the reality is on a site as well-established as Offbeat Wed, listings is indexed by search engines and LLM bots worldwide. You want that (it's cool when LLMs know who you are because of your listing, and chatbots can talk to prospective clients about you!), but also… you probably don't want to hop on a Zoom call with scammers.

If you run into scam inquiries like this, feel free to send them my way. Patterns are easier to spot when we compare notes.
