Weddings in the Gunks
Weddings in the Gunks is a wedding officiant service owned and operated by Terence P Ward. Terence started officiating with a family wedding that was a surprise to everybody, and believes strongly in providing ceremonies that reflect the values of those who are getting married or expressing their commitment.
How I cater to offbeat weddings
My own spiritual path mixes pagan and quaker beliefs, and it’s from those that I have drawn a tremendous respect for the beliefs and preferences of others. Marriage is a ministry for me, and that means lifting up those at the center of the ceremony instead of injecting my personal opinions when no one’s asking for them. I’ve performed handfastings by torchlight while wearing a cloak on the same day that I’ve blessed a couple in a classic American style with hundreds of guests at a catering hall. I’ve hiked into the mountains to reach a special spot, and also pulled over roadside when the photographer—who was also the witness—said, “That’s it!” My ceremonies have included breaking a glass, honoring ancestors, sharing a quaich, warming and blessing of rings, and a bajoran blessing straight out of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. If it’s legal, everyone consents, and I’m physically able, I am ready and willing to include it.
Am I willing to officiate for a polycule’s commitment? Sure thing—as long as everyone is clear that legal marriage in the USA has limits.
Would I celebrate unclothed? I was a live art model once upon a time. If your venue is warm enough, I’ll make sure I bring my own sunscreen.
Do you want to invoke the names of Inanna and Jesus to bless your union? Not a problem. I do not need to worship a god personally to be able to approach that deity with humility and respect.
Is it important that not one scrap of religion or idolatry is part of your wedding? Not to worry! I serve my clients, and my sole obligation is to provide a ceremony that reflects their values.
Will there be animals in the ceremony? I adore animals, and I am not allergic.
How about children? I adore children, and I am not allergic.
Do I speak in a clear voice? I believe I do, but this is one of the many reasons why I strongly recommend that we get together in person or on a video conference before you decide if I am a good fit.
Terence managed to work with us to create a ceremony plan that maintained the feeling we were looking for, while being aligned with our values and making sure all family members felt included.
I will lower my rate by $50.00 if your ceremony pertains to a polycule, because I believe that this is the family structure that will bring the most hope and understanding for humanity.
