About Handy Entertainment

Who we’re for

We’ve always stood with, and for, and worked with the LGBTQ+ communities, the BIPOC communities, people with disabilities, and people who are marginalized for just being themselves.

We are for people who want entertainment that connects: We can get the Montagues and the Capulets tongue-kissing.

If you want your wedding to be about YOU, your values, creativity, and love–then we’re your people.

We get to work with all people: every background, religion, color, gender identity, age, nationality and all the things that make a person a person.

We make everyone feel seen and welcome.

We are there to help you turn those awkward moments into connection.

You know that moment at weddings where everyone is “having a nice time” but not really connecting?

We don’t do that.

We create unique, interactive experiences like Chocolate Lip Print Analysis, or our Zoltar Fortune Teller Booth (free human included) that tickle (maybe shock?) people out of their shells and get them to open up to each other.

How do we get people to connect?

Connecting people through an experience is how we help them get to know each other. We hold safe space for them to find out more about themselves and each other, to talk about things that matter. We give them something good to talk about–what makes them tick, their secret sauce.

Top it off with a touch of whimsy, sass, or quirk, or, if you prefer, dignified, elevated, and refined—we will craft personalized moments that reflect you and your love.

If you want to spark curiosity and give your people something great to talk about, then we‘re your people.

What we do

* Turn small talk into real convos.
* Unveil gifts and insights folks never knew they had.
* Create a memento about this moment in time that they will hold on to and take with them.

What we’re not

* Loud
* Scripted
* Costumed models smiling and waving

We’re great in the in-between times

You know those moments at weddings, those totally awkward interludes where folks don’t know what to do, who to talk to, or what in the world they should talk about? That’s where we shine.

We’re your slam-dunk to add meaning, intelligence, and warmth to the stuck places and help your people get to know and like each other.

Fabulous ways to use us

  • Receptions
  • Showers
  • Rehearsal dinners
  • Cocktail hour
  • Brunches
  • Luncheons
  • Polterabend (It’s a wild German tradition–check it out!)

A real story

The couple came from totally different backgrounds.
And when I say different, I mean really different. Cultures, beliefs, countries—all of it.
They wanted to help their families connect.
Right when we started, a distinguished person sauntered over for the first Lip Print Analysis of the evening.
The lipstick they chose was perfect and so was the print they made on their card.
When they got their kiss reading it was a jaw drop moment.
Afterwards, they couldn’t stop thanking us.

The best part was when they ran over to the Groom’s family, told them about us, and then brought them over!

The number of people we saw that evening was insane. And they all had something great to talk about—all the good stuff with their new friends and families.
Grateful.

What is Handy Entertainment?

Handy Entertainment is a small company that creates interactive experiences for special events that help people connect. What we do is not just entertainment—we give guests reasons to laugh together, talk to each other, share stories, and create memories they’ll still be discussing long after the cake is gone.

Is this like hiring a magician, or a psychic, or is it something else?

We offer some things that you’ll already recognize–like amazing musicians, artists, mentalists, and other performers, but we have quite a bit that’s uniquely ours. Our most beloved and popular acts are interactions based on our own unique combinations of personality analysis and the ancient arts of fortune telling. But the thing we do better than anyone else is create moments of fun and meaningful connection.

How do your experiences help wedding guests connect with each other?

We know that the only thing people will remember about your wedding is how it made them feel, long after the party has wrapped. One moment of clarity and insight, where a person is seen, accomplishes more than a thousand introductions. Our experiences spark curiosity and great conversations between people–people who may have never met before. Discovering the unexpected draws people close.

Which Handy Entertainment experiences work best for weddings?

The most popular Handy Entertainment eexperiences for weddings right now are Lip Print Analysis (Kiss Readings!), Handwriting Analysis, Speed Tarot, and Strolling Palm Readings.  The best choice depends on your guests, your vision, and the atmosphere you’d like to create. Coffee Cup Readings and Tea Leaf Readings are refined and luxe for intimate, leisurely gatherings like showers and rehearsal dinners.

But everyone LOVES our Zoltar Fortune Teller Booth! Zoltar can give out swag, give readings, and be costumed in many different ways.

We have guests who don’t know each other. Can you help break the ice?

Our acts are the hands down the very best at breaking the ice for people who’ve just met. That’s our specialty. Some couples want only dancing. Some want fireworks. Some want guests who arrive as strangers and leave as friends. That’s what we do.

How do your fortune telling and intuitive-style experiences fit modern weddings?

Our fortune-telling and personality analysis-based experiences are what people increasingly want for their weddings. We all want experiences instead of just being spectators. Guests want to participate, discover, and share. If you want interludes that feel memorable instead of performative–just ask!

Will our skeptical guests enjoy this?

Those skeptics usually become our biggest fans. Guests don’t need to believe in anything supernatural to enjoy a thoughtful conversation, a surprising insight, or an experience that is about them, their special traits and gifts. (And, gotta tell you–some of our biggest corporate clients are Fintech nerds–but shhh!)

Can your activations work during cocktail hour, receptions, welcome parties, or brunches?

Yes! Our activations are like pop ups–moments of surprise, where people are delighted to have something unique and fun to do at the cocktail hours, receptions, rehearsal dinners, welcome parties, or pre-parties and showers. We are adaptable and can be integrated into virtually any part of a wedding weekend.

How much space do you need?

The amount of space we need is far less than people expect, usually around 10 square feet for something larger like Zoltar, the Giving Skirt, or our Fortune Tent. Guests do like to form groups around us.

We’ve worked in grand ballrooms, intimate gardens, breweries, museums, mansions, castles, and unconventional venues of all kinds. Whether you need something small and cozy, strolling entertainers, or want to create an eye-catching backdrop, we can help you make it happen.

Can you customize the experience to reflect our personalities, story, or wedding theme?

We love customizing each and and every event. The most memorable experiences feel like they belong specifically at your wedding and nowhere else.

What kinds of reactions do couples and guests usually have?

The reactions of couples and guests when they interact with us have all the feels: laughter, surprise, curiosity, reflection, delight, and sometimes even tears—the good kind.

Do your experiences create keepsakes that guests take with them?

All of our entertainment can include keepsakes that guests take with them. Guests often leave with something tangible, but more importantly, they leave with stories and new friends.

Are your performers inclusive and welcoming to guests from all backgrounds?

Our performers are carefully selected and trained. They are warm and welcoming and ensure that every guest feels seen, respected, and comfortable participating.

How far in advance should we book?

To ensure that you are able to have the entertainment you want on your special day(s), we advise clients that the earlier, the better. Popular wedding dates disappear quickly, especially during peak wedding seasons. 18-months out is good if you can, but you can always see if we can accommodate last minute plans. Different regions and cultures have different timelines. But inquire even if the date is coming up soon. Sometimes dates open up due to an unforeseen event.

Why do popular wedding dates book up so quickly?

Popular wedding dates book up quickly because weddings tend to be on weekends and around holidays. We are a lean team and not a cast of thousands! Our team consists of incredibly skilled professionals who are extensively trained. The number of engagements we can take on are limited.

What if we’re looking for something memorable but not cheesy?

If you want memorable but not cheesy, then you’re our kind of people. Our goal is never to become the center of attention. Our goal is to help your guests become the best part of the celebration. You want costumes? We’ve got you covered! Conventional attire–yes, we can dress it up or down.

How do we know which experience is right for our wedding?

When you’re ready, reach out and tell us what you want–we’ll ask questions, listen carefully, and recommend what genuinely fits your guests and goals.

What’s the easiest way to start the conversation?

Reach out on our contact form on the website. Tell us about your wedding. We’ll take it from there.

What makes Handy Entertainment different from other wedding entertainment companies?

Most entertainment companies focus on performance. We focus on participation. That distinction matters.

What happens if we wait to book?

We get it–people need to get their dates, venues, and guest lists lined up before booking entertainment. Don’t wait too long, because your preferred date might be unavailable. Unfortunately, unlike generic entertainment, our availability is limited.

Frequently Asked Questions

How I cater to offbeat weddings – our people

We cater to Offbeat Weddings in every way possible. In addition to coming up with the most audacious concepts–(Food Readings, anyone?), I am proud to seek out, train, and hire people with disabilities and pay them well (ask me about that part).

Our Team is inclusive–we are: LGBTQ+, all races, gender identities, and everything else that represents the best of humanity.

We work with thoroughly vetted, diverse vendors, talent, and partners.

And despite all that is going on in this world, we see you.

BTW, I’m weird, but I’m good weird.

We have had the opportunity and delight to work with all types of couples, ceremonies, religions, languages, genders, and all of the things that make us who we are.

Couples who are LGBTQ+, interfaith,  neurodivergent, polyamorous, mixed-culture, or non-religious know that we are there for them and will do everything in our power to help them make their vision come to life.

No matter whether you are eloping, having a mini-wedding, a traveling roadshow kinda thing, a multi-day event, a destination wedding, or even a [gasp!] traditional wedding, ask us how we can help.

We are based in Atlanta, Georgia, and travel nationally and internationally to serve our clients.

We can provide most services at our basic rates for events located within 60 miles of Greater Atlanta.

Accessibility is incredibly important to us and we work with you to see what you need to accommodate every guest.

Some of the accessibility issues we have pointed out and successfully addressed in the past:

  • Mobility
  • Visual
  • Audio
  • Allergens
  • Environmental
  • Signage
  • Placement and seating (and what you are silently communicating) of different people.

and so much more.

Our booking process from the first inquiry is to see if we can provide what you want.

We ask about your date, location, expected number of guests, and if you have a specific kind of entertainment in mind.

If we can help you, we then ask you about your budget range so we can tailor our proposal to your needs.

It’s similar to asking a friend where you should stay in Paris: They’ll ask you when, where, for how many people, and what your budget is. Are you looking for a hostel or a hotel?

We’ll ask you how many guests you want us to interact with. For example, for a one-hour, pre-event cocktail reception, do you want all 300 guests to participate? That would mean more entertainers and assistant/facilitators!

There are many variables about when people book us, but you will most likely get your preferred date, time, and entertainment if you start out as early as possible. 18 months is usually good, but we sometimes have cancellations or date changes that gave us last minute availability,

That one question I wish every couple would ask us is how we can accomplish what we all have set as their priorities if/when something doesn’t go according to plan. There is always something that doesn’t go according to plan.

If you take the time to ask what we can do to mitigate those things that could happen, we can help you by sharing our back up plans for back up plans.

The things that affect the cost of entertainment are pretty similar to the things that affect the cost of catering:

  • Date
  • Venue
  • Time
  • Number of guests
  • Types of entertainment
  • Number of guest interactions

There are many other things that are important to take into consideration:

  • When do the various parts of the event or ceremony take place and when do we need to load in to avoid disrupting them?
  • How easy is load-in–i.e. one elevator and twenty vendors; parking 2 miles away and no valet?
  • Is there a Green Room–a place to change, work or relax, and safely leave valuables?

Love from Offbeat Couples

“Wowow! Jan and team were FABULOUS! We were trying to find unique entertainment for our wedding and came across Handy Entertainment at a bridal show. We did tea leaf readings and the lip print readings and both were a hit! Jan took careful consideration of all the details, which I appreciated, and the guests noticed as well. There were choices of lipstick color, tea flavors, fonts, card stock colors, attire/costume, etc. Everything seems customizable so you can book Handy Entertainment for any event type. In addition, Jan responded promptly and was a dream to work with. THANK YOU!”

Lip Print Reading - Handy Entertainment

“They totally rocked it out for our wedding and I felt taken care of and treated like it was just as important to them as it was to me to create the vision. A far cry from other vendors who it seemed like it was “just a job”. Not Jan. From the first call, I knew I didn’t need to look anywhere else.”

– Sierra C.
Tea Leaf Readings at the Fox Theatre - Handy Entertainment

“Jan and team are absolute professionals. We were looking for unique entertainment ideas for our wedding and came across Handy Entertainment. We did an hour of lip print readings and an hour of tea leaf readings, and we probably should have booked them for the entire night. The guests LOVED every minute. I would imagine they are great for any event because everything was so customizable. Jan took special care with all the details to make sure everything matched our vision and style. Honestly, we’re trying to figure out what party is coming up next that we could book her for! 5 stars, without a doubt!”

Misha at 103 West-Handy Entertainment

“Hello Jan, you are amazing and such a talent…I so appreciate your contribution to making the Heller Family so very happy with Misha’s celebration. Misha was over the top pleased with how successful her event was. She never imagined everyone would stay so long and be so engaged…she thought 2/3 of the group would leave by 8:30 since they are in the medical community and had to be at work at 5:30AM in most cases to begin their day. She was so happy and felt so loved and adored.”
I would recommend you to anyone who wants a unique presence at their event. You added color, texture and intrigue. People were captivated by your personality and your insightful heartfelt words. Thank you again!”

German Weddings - Katharine Roehler - Handy entertainment

Positive guest experiences are so incredibly important, and Jan so effortlessly made everyone feel right at home. I would absolutely recommend her services for your next event!”

“We used Handy Entertainment to hire a fortune teller as a fun thing for our wedding. It was such a great decision! She did tarot, palm, and lip print readings. People LOVED it! The whole process was easy. Jan was super communicative and checked in regularly before the wedding. Everything went smoothly the night of the wedding and Jan checked in the next day. I highly recommend Handy Entertainment to add a special touch to your event.”

How do you personaI does that shape how you work with couples?

I am a straight white woman and I’ve had the gift of living many different lives in many different communities. I am an Allie, a friend, an activist, an educator, and I get it: Love is Love.

How did you get started as a wedding pro?

When I started producing events I saw a need for entertainment that connects people, particularly at those moments when people meet for the first time and are building a life together.

What was the moment you realized you didn't fit into the traditional wedding industry?

Ha! I immediately saw (and felt, and was TOLD) that I didn’t fit in to the traditional ways weddings are seen and done, particularly here in the Deep South of the USA. Most people like to do what other people are doing. I have to do what I feel is right. It doesn’t resonate with everyone and that is totally fine with me!

Describe your aesthetic in three words that have nothing to do with weddings.

Three words that describe my aesthetic that aren’t traditionally associated with weddings are: Quirky Innovative Multi-Sensory

What's one thing conventional wedding vendors often get wrong, and how do you do it differently?

I would never say other wedding vendors do things ‘wrong’ but there are so many conventional ‘wedding habits’ that people see and emulate that don’t necessarily serve the people who are coming together. You name it: whether it is the timeline, the ‘traditions’ that they say are necessary–ALL of it is open to reinterpretation.

What's your favorite wedding tradition and why?

I love so many different kinds of wedding traditions! One tradition that I love, though, is the German ‘Polterabend’ where friends and family gather together and smash up [old and useless] ceramics and pottery to dispel evil spirits!

What wedding tradition or trend do you wish would die and never come back?

The traditions of making people wear uncomfortable things for their weddings or making other people wear uncomfortable things–are they really necessary? Also, any of those activities that label someone a ‘Winner’ and the other people ‘Losers’ are not kind.

Have you planned your own wedding? How did it change how you work?

How did you KNOW?????! Oh, I sure did plan my own wedding and it had to be quick and easy because of the circumstances!

What's the weirdest or most nontraditional wedding element you've helped pull off?

You haven’t given me much space to show why it’s not so easy to choose the “weirdest” or most non-traditional wedding elements we’ve done–but here goes: We absolutely loved the Halloween Austin Powers-themed wedding (I wanted to go as Fat Bastard, but the costume was really expensive and would have had a very limited afterlife) we did during the pandemic. To keep folks safe, we used plexiglass partitions in the Zoltar Booth, an air purification system, dual sound system, and a paging mechanism to keep folks from getting to close to each other.

What do you wish couples knew about you before they reached out?

I wish, from the bottom of my heart, that everyone knew that we are focused on helping them get what they want and being comfortable with that. We are all about trying to make things work for you and your people and we do not do ‘gotchas’ or try to slide in upsells. There is no shame in having a budget and sticking to it!

What's the most surprising client feedback you've ever gotten?

The most surprising client feedback for me is when somebody tells me, at a much later date, how much what we did meant to them and their loved ones and how we created relationships between people that they would have never imagined–sort of like the after-effects of what we do.

How do your couples describe you when they're recommending you to friends?

When I see the testimonials, reviews, and kind words couples have left us, I realize why we do what we do. They usually talk about how much we care, how we do everything we possibly can to help them create something beyond what they even envisioned. They talk about kindness, our attention to detail, the ways we go above and beyond. That’s the joy of it for me–how we create something that is all about THEM!
