These posts are all about getting married in backyards — sometimes the couple’s OWN backyard, and sometimes the backyard of a friend of family member. You may also want to check out our archive of at-home weddings.

The offbeat wedding crasher: the story of how I showed up at a reader’s wedding

As those of you who follow Offbeat Bride on Facebook already know, this weekend I crashed a reader’s wedding (and live-updated the whole thing as I got progressively more inebriated). Jesse & Ben’s potluck backyard hippie handfasting

When you’re in the mood to kick tradition out, this is the celebration to see: a non-legal backyard solstice potluck with a VERY participatory ceremony, personal tattoos instead of rings, and a super sweet memorial for the groom’s father. These adorable hippies knew what they wanted and embraced it full-on. And we get to see it all come together!

Erin & Ryan’s Northern Ireland roadtrip and homespun Appalachian handfasting

This pair likes to take the old proverb “you can’t have your cake and eat it, too” as both a personal challenge and an individual goal. Therefore, when they were planning their wedding and couldn’t decide between two drastically different affairs (a free-spirited private destination wedding adventure versus an intricately detailed small community backyard handfasting), they decided to have them both! Prepare for gorgeous scenery and naughty favors ahead!

Luci & Josh’s relaxing backyard wedding

Some weddings just lull you into a safe and happy place where things work out and smiles abound. This wedding is your respite from a rough day: a sunny and warm afternoon in Tennessee, comfort food (Southern-style, natch), dried wildflower bouquets, and hand-written vows. The only thing that would make it better would be a pooch in a tux. Oh wait, they had him, too!
