Lauren and Andrew did not want a traditional wedding in any sense of the word. Lauren's vintage-style custom red dress was the first way we can tell that this couple did things their way and it WORKED. They chose to have a small wedding which meant they got to spend quality time with everyone there, a major goal.
There were amazing skyline views, sweet speeches, killer cocktails, sweet rustic details, and lots of wine. Let's see how it all played out and hear from the couple themselves…
We wanted to have our wedding in Brooklyn and keep our vendors as local as possible, but we had a really tight budget and had NO desire to keep things traditional. We also got engaged in May and had the ceremony in October — so simplicity was a necessity! It was important to me that we upheld our own principles and beliefs. We didn't have a bridal party, didn't have an aisle or alter; instead our immediate family joined us in front of the space.
One of my best friends performed the ceremony and it was witnessed by our immediate family and another good friend (surrounded by our other guests, ~50 total). Our ceremony was free from religion (we are atheist/agnostic), but given that some of our family members are religious (Jewish and Catholic) we asked them to do readings that resonated with us and give us “blessings” for our future.
We specifically chose a space that was already decorated so we wouldn't have to do much — Manhattan Inn's decor was rustic chic with reclaimed wood and furniture with a gorgeous skylight and baby grand piano in the main room. We purchased a single bouquet of flowers to compliment the bud vases the restaurant normally laid out. We also made our own table number tents and displays, distressing cards for the tents and using/labeling old wine bottles for each table. Since it was the end of October and we both love Halloween, we also displayed skeleton bride and groom figurines at the sign in table.
I never imagined myself wearing white wedding dress, had always wanted to have a dress custom made for me, and love '50s style. I worked with Julie Mollo to create a custom red dress (with gold lining) that I adore (and have even worn again)! It was great to support a local, woman-owned business. Julie made Andy a matching tie and pocket square to go with a Brooks Brothers suit so we'd be coordinated.
