Calling all book lovers, sci-fi nerds, fantasy geeks, and anyone else who wants to bring some more magic into their wedding day! You won’t want to miss Lia and Justin’s nerdy multicultural wedding (and you don't have to, thanks to Koontz Photography). It will inspire you to LEVEL UP your nerdiness on your big day–or any other part of you that you want to celebrate! Nerd or not, there’s a lot to be gleaned from Lia and Justin’s gorgeous wedding day, like how to incorporate your cultural roots, how to share what you love with your guests (all DIY style), and how to invite your family and friends to time travel with you throughout the years. Yes, you read that right, and no Tardis necessary!
The couple at this nerdy multicultural wedding stayed true to their roots
Lia and Justin’s wedding was anything but American traditional… they brought in lots of elements from their European heritage that made the day all the more meaningful. Perhaps the most obvious was Justin rocking a kilt – but we also love the matching sash that Lia wore that (literally) tied their looks together. (But let’s not forget Lia’s green converse that REALLY completed the whole ensemble!) They also incorporated a handfasting into their wedding ceremony – a Scottish and Celtic ritual in which the couple’s hands are wrapped together with a cord to symbolize their union.
Lia and Justin also incorporated a log cutting ceremony into their big day. What’s that, you ask? Well, it’s an old Germanic wedding tradition in which the couple uses a saw to cut through a log together. That part might seem obvious, but the less obvious part is the meaning behind it: it symbolizes the first obstacle the couple must overcome together as spouses. With traditions like this one, the dance floor isn’t the only place you can break a sweat on your wedding day!
This nerdy multicultural wedding is a sci-fi and fantasy wonderland
For some people, it’s just as easy to get lost in a good book as it is to get lost in the eyes of your boo… and Lia and Justin proudly put themselves into that category. Luckily, there’s no need to choose between the two! Lia and Justin made their love for books a big part of their wedding decor. We especially love the library-themed table where guests can write tips for the couple on old-fashioned library book cards–and the introvert charging station! (I mean, what is a library if not an introvert charging station, after all?)
Beyond the book decor, Lia and Justin celebrated their shared “nerdiness” with lots of DIY sci-fi and fantasy decorations. From the map of Middle Earth tablecloth to the Dungeons and Dragons die to Star Wars, Pokemon, and Dr. Who… they covered ALL the sci-fi and fantasy bases–without breaking the bank, thanks to their creativity and craftiness!
We are sailing away with this brilliant DIY idea from this nerdy multicultural wedding
Okay, y’all will DEFINITELY want to steal this idea for your wedding… As part of the reception, Lia and Justin invited their guests to write a message for them and place it in a bottle numbered with the corresponding anniversary they will open it on–adorable! What a brilliant way to keep the magic of your wedding day alive throughout the years. Just have a wine party (ya gotta get those bottles somehow…), or ask friends to save their bottles for you, decorate them how you’d like, and violá! Your friends and family can make like Dr. Who and time travel with you throughout the years!
This nerdy multicultural wedding made us believe in magic
From the stories Lia and Justin have fallen in love with together, to their love itself–this couple’s big day was full of magic. Not to mention creating some incredible decorations without breaking the bank… that’s some serious magic in and of itself! We’re so glad these two shared their magic with us. Wishing you so many adventures in this world and beyond, Lia and Justin!
