I so want to find a dress that doesn’t look awful on me. It’s my second wedding, I’m 40, overweight, and not an attractive person. I look at pretty dresses and cry because I know ill just make em all look awful.
Oh, Syd. My heart breaks to read that. I’m sorry you are feeling down in the dumps, & let me tell ya’, if I had to get hitched tomorrow, I’d feel the same way – I’m well past the first blush of youth, & carrying too much extra weight, too. (Plus I was never small to begin with). You know your Intended loves the every-lovin’ bejesus out of you, right? Swoons to think of you – is attracted to you, is excited by you, the works…right? And you feel the same about them, or you wouldn’t be marrying them!! Consider having something made – it’s the best way to get the look you want. It’s often not more than buying something off the rack. Everyone has at least 1 good feature – for me, it was my shoulders, so when I had my wedding dress made, we high-lighted that with an off-the shoulder cut & lower neckline, made a higher waist, and I had sleeves of layers of sheer fabric – which looked float-y & pretty, & hid the wobbles. My only other advice might be – go for high quality fabric, like silk, and keep details to a minimum – think ‘tailoring’ not “gobs of ruffles” – and use accessories as your eye-catchers. Kick-ass shoes, a glittery pair of earrings, and/or a bag or bouquet that draw gasps. Plus, P.S. I think these Downton-style dresses were MADE for us older dames – I mean, vintage looks sharp as hell when you’re a bit more life-experienced – and more like playing dress up (sometimes!) on the super young.
I know these lovely dresses will look awful on me, even though I love them!
I’m leaning towards a cream ramones t shirt, some kick ass boots, and a facinator. I guess at least I won’t look stupid. My kiddos are up for a ramones theme, and my sweetheart will be happy he doesn’t have to wear a suit.
My beloved has been very unwell, and I just wanted so much to wow him. I never dress up, I never look put together or chic…more dog hair and muddy boots.
I’m trying to live on a lettuce leaf and a prayer see if I can drop a bit of weight, but with the best will and crash diet in the world, I won t look great in a dainty dress, and just haven’t got the confidence to pull off a corset and flowing skirt number.
Thanks Toad, it meant so much that you would reply!
And jeans! And jeans! Yikes!?
I LOOOOVE the Ramones T-shirt & jeans idea! With cool boots etc it sounds like you’ll look fierce & edgy! Wear what you love best!! (PS We just went to an outdoor wedding, which, because it has been 40C (over 80F) & muggy here, was, frankly, awful. I have a light cotton dress I could’ve worn with wedge heels, & at the last minute I said screw it, & wore a short sleeved black cotton shirt, black capris and my sparkly black Converse. And I wasn’t under-dressed, at all. 😉 ). Hope your day is awesome, & your sugar-pie is feeling better by then.
