The Offbeat Bride: Christy, Hairstylist
Her offbeat partner: Patrick, Retail clerk
Date and location of wedding: The Biloxi Visitor's Center, Biloxi, MS — October 26, 2014
Our offbeat wedding at a glance: We really wanted to have a good mix of some traditional stuff and some of our own fun touches. My parents helped a lot with creating the vision of that with the purple uplighting, candle altar, table decor with candelabras, flowers, trees, and the awesome trick or treat table that were all in our ceremony and reception since they were in the same place. My dad actually built the candle altar and the photo area backdrop himself and put a lot of time and effort into making it just how I wanted. The morning of the wedding I had so much help from family and friends with all the set up which helped me chill out.
Our good friend Josh, who is also one of my tattoo artists, got ordained to marry us which was really cool. I am the only one with colorful hair, but I do hair, so I colored extensions for my mom, aunt, and bridesmaids to wear to match our colors of red and purple. The morning of, my long time friend and co-worker styled my hair. Our flowers were in reds and purples, and were over-sprayed with black.
We had a theme of “'till death do us part” on our wedding invitations and a poster photo at the table welcoming our guests. Our guest book was a Dr. Seuss saying in a matted frame that everyone could sign. I had planned on wearing some heels on which I had painted rainbow dots on the bottom, but ended up wearing my boots because I felt more comfortable in them.
Tell us about the ceremony:
Our ceremony started with Patrick and wedding party entering to the song “Crystalize” by Lindsey Stirling. Both of my parents walked me down the aisle, and that made me really happy that they were comfortable with it since I knew it was different from a normal wedding tradition. I walked down to the instrumental version of “Turning Page” by Sleeping at Last.
Josh did a great job telling a little story about us and how we can't quite recall how we met (crazy but true thing about us) and we could have never known we would end up where we are now. My sister read “To Love is Not to Possess” by James Kavanaugh.
We had a sand ceremony, and had Nine Inch Nails' “We're in this Together” played as we did it.
After our sweet hand-written vows and kissing, we took our first “selfie” as a married couple at our candle altar! We walked out to The Birthday Massacre's “Kill the Lights.”
Our biggest challenge:
The biggest challenge to me was feeling like I wanted to talk to and hug every single person who came to celebrate with us and still manage to dance, take photos, play in the photo booth, and eat. I wanted everyone to know how happy I was that they were there and supporting us. I also had a hard time with taking it a little personally when lots of guests who planned on coming said they were coming. I think that I was being sensitive when I remembered each person that we had invited and wanted to share the day with and felt a little down about it, but we still had a great turnout of about 125 people or so.
My favorite moment:
Our most meaningful moment was definitely our vows. It was all from the heart and I didn't even realize how emotional they would make us! We ended our vows with, “I promise to love you completely, and let you love me completely.”
Dancing at our reception was special, too, because we never get to dance with each other. Our first dance was the song “The Luckiest” by Ben Folds. While dancing, we laughed to ourselves about how many verses there are and it seemed to go on forever.
My funniest moment:
The funniest moment of our reception had to be when both of my grandmothers had gone over to the photo booth area and dressed up in some of the Halloween-themed props and came out on the dance floor and danced with me.
Another hilarious moment was when I told my bridesmaids that I wanted to recreate a “mad boob grab” photo that I had seen online. The outcome of reenacting this idea was lots of laughs and some hilarious facial expressions. Our photographer had the guys do this photo after we did and they didn't tell me about it until we got our photos back and I couldn't stop laughing!
Another awesome thing was that my dad, who is the last person on earth to ever color his hair purple, did just that for the wedding. Then my grandpa shows up with his hair sprayed purple to match!
