Are you guys doing any special transport for your wedding day? I looked into limos, because I thought it would be fun, but they're so expensive… and I don't know if they're so much fun that they're worth that price, LOL.So what kinds of things are you guys doing? Anything at all?
Good question, Jessy! I've rounded up some of my favorite get-away options for offbeat weddings. Aaron and I didn't do a dramatic and fun “just married” drive away send-off. We just hopped in our rental car at the end of the night, so this roundup was my time to live vicariously. So, these suggestions range from the simple and silly (skateboards?) to the outrageous and expensive (Batmobile!?). But all of them would make for great photos ops, if not some major WOW factor.
Bikes or a bicycle built for two
Classic car
Pedicab (bike rickshaw)
Horse-drawn carriage
Three words to describe Béatrice & Danny's wedding: pink, pastel and vintage. Wait, can I add a forth? Eye-gasm.
Ditch the carriage and ride a horse
Helicopter
Golf carts
Public bus or rent a school bus
Electric, hybrid, or energy efficient car
Hearse
Trolly or street car
Hollywood vehicle
Farm equipment
Skateboard
Now, I know y'all have many more and even greater transportation options — so leave 'em in the comments!
I’ve been thinking about using my dad’s 1907 REO 4 passanger roadster. It’s seafoam green so it would go with my baby blue color scheme great! Only problem is that the car isn’t working and is in peaces right now.
My cousin and her new man made their get away in an ambulance after her high heel broke causing her to break an ankle!
Pristine white ’65 Corvette Stingray convertible here. It used to live in the Corvette museum but now belongs to my father-in-law. I’m going to have to change into my reception dress before I leave the ceremony venue because my 7ft tulle train won’t fit in the car! Last I checked there were 3 boats living in storage too so we could also have a wedding armada if we played our cards right.
VESPAS!
I wanted to rent rainbow-coloured Vespas for the whole wedding party…but logistically it didn’t work out because of getting to photo locations (there were 4), then to the pub, and then to the reception site. It would’ve looked so awesome though.
My other top choice was to rent a vintage VW Van. But I couldn’t find one in my city for rent.
So instead we rented a limo (we got a free upgrade too), and that worked out amazingly…even though it wasn’t my first choice.
Since we’re both Ford mustang enthusiasts, we’re thinking of getting away in my fiance’s 1997 Bright Atlantic Blue Ford cobra. Kinda neat, we restored it from the ground up (virtually everything on it was destroyed when he bought it).
It’s soooooooo loud! We can’t hold conversations in it… lol But, it’s sexy & fast so it works.
Here’s a pic of it:

We considered walking, since everything was relatively nearby. The train of my dress negated this option for us, but it could work for someone with comfy wedding shoes and a shorter dress.
This would have been what we did, since the venue is less than a block away from the after-party, we’ve thought about getting all our friends out there to line the sidewalk and light sparklers instead of throwing rice, as we walk past the building in between our wedding and our dance party…
But then my friend Tim built a bike rickshaw, so that’s about the sweetest thing ever.
The getaway car for three generations for my dad’s family has been my grandfather’s 1950s Oldsmobile.

It’s a beautiful car.
YOWZA!!! That’s a gorgeous car!
Innit though? My grandfather bought it brand new back in the day and just finished restoring it a few years ago. It’s faithfully driven many Aufdermaurs from the church to the Swiss Hall on their wedding days.
I was in a wedding party and the bride and groom rented a trolley. It was CHEAPER than a limo, way bigger, more unique, and made for great photos. Look into it!
Yeah, related to that, there was this couple who rented the S.L.U.T. http://offbeatwed.com/2010/09/washington-trolley-wedding 🙂
As our two venues are close to one another, we’ll be walking. I’ll be bringing my converse to change into. We quite like the idea of making it into a parade with our wedding party carrying banners, waving flags and banging drums as we go down the street! It would be great to ride down the street on a parade float but I’m pretty sure we’d never get permission!
I also love the idea of the whole wedding party waiting at a bus stop and boarding a public bus.
It’s not our ‘getaway’ transport, but we’re taking our guests from the ceremony to the reception on canal boats! (after parading through the town to get to the canal, of course!) 🙂
We’re both bicycling enthusiasts, and planning to go on a bike trip for the honeymoon, so we’ll probably make our getaway by bike, likely with all our gear and everything! It would be neat to also bike from the ceremony to the reception, but I think it would take a little too long (I think it’s about half an hour by car, an hour by bike…), and I’d probably need to change out of the dress for the ride, and back into it for the reception.
We are bicycle enthusiasts, too. We actually might be having our reception at the end of the street from our house and will probably borrow a friends tandem to ride home. In pictures, NO ONE will ever know that we rode a half a block to get away! 🙂 We are also looking at a bicycle honeymoon!
We don’t have a getaway vehicle because us and any guests that want are camping out in the woods behind the venue that night!
How about a raucous processional back to the campsites of folks carrying torches, singing and playing instruments! I’m thinking this: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/v6kVxV4O_dk/maxresdefault.jpg
We’re not hiring cars at this stage. We’re just going to borrow a bunch of our friends cars. They’re all different bright colours. I love colours. Our ‘wedding car’ is a vintage car that belongs to a friend of my fiance.
I was thinking a kayak or canoe, a short paddle across the small pond where our wedding ceremony and reception will be held. Possibly somewhat anticlimactic due to short distance but I love it 🙂
We’re renting a double decker bus in Vegas, but only because my fiancee refuses to ride on the back of my motorcycle. 🙂
Our guests will be arriving by tram! There is a historical tram line which runs through the Thuringian Forest which can be rented out. I will be arriving in the church in a London black cab! FH and I will then use that to go to the reception 😀
My husband and I rode off on his motorcycle, still in our wedding attire. It was fun trying to get our helmets on while the guests pelted us with confetti! Someone even bobby-trapped our helmets, filling them with confetti that dumped all over us when we put them on!
I love the tuk tuk idea!!
We’re borrowing my uncle’s RV. Has a fridge, big enough for everyone, and free!
It wasn’t our “getaway” transportation, but for getting from the beach where we were married to the site of our wedding reception, a friend was able to get us the use of two 4-person bicycle surreys. My husband, the six members of our wedding party and I pedaled the 2 miles from the beach to our reception. It was tough to do in a strong head wind while wearing a wedding dress, but the surreys are one of my many favorite parts of our wedding day. They were just too awesome. My guests loved them and we even got a nice response as we rode past various folks at the beach town.
We’ll probably just make our getaway in my own broken down piece of junk car XD Alas, I can’t afford to rent anything fancy.
That tuk tuk picture is adorable! I saw a wedding in Kinvara, Co. Galway, Ireland once when I was passing through and the wedding transport was a big white truck cab (minus the trailer load) – the bride and groom were in stitches laughing in the cab – they looked so so happy and the whole town was out waving at them – twas joyous!
We are having the ceremony and reception in one place so transport will be my parents car 😉
We are going to go the segway route 🙂
next time i’m in seattle, i’m gonna hire the barbie dream hearse just for fun!!!!! 🙂 That looks SO amazing. 🙂 Talk about fun!
My fiance and I just decided to rent a charter bus so we can have one big party wagon, filled with friends!
My FH and I are riding off in a boat, since we’re getting married lake side.
My grandparents celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary by restoring a car identical to the Chevrolet my grandfather drove when they got married in the fifties…they drove it from NC to FREAKING ALASKA. I think it would be a really sweet gesture to incorporate some of their romance into my wedding by finding a car like that and renting it for the day.
We’re trying to plan a small airport wedding, since the hubby-to-be is a pilot, we plan on renting a plane and taking off for just a half hour to escape everyone.
Our ceremony is in a park and the reception is in a Lodge in the park. We plan on riding around in a golf cart to get to and from other areas of the park for pictures…now we just need a golf cart!
My FH SO wanted to have a grand processional on his motorcycle, accompanied by all of the biker guys (and one biker gal) who are invited…but decided against it due to helmet hair. :/
However, he DOES have a 1973 BMW Bavaria in the garage that would be sweet if he can get it running 🙂
These are really unique and funny ideas! I’ve bookmarked this page. Thanks for sharing with us.
There is nothing more glamorous or more sophisticated than the lines of a classic car. The classic cars in our collection stand out form the crowd and are some of the most prestigious of all vintage vehicles.

Our wedding is at a friend’s house on the lake We’re doing out getaway with our Bridal henchman and other VIPS on a pontoon across the lake to our after party at a lakeside bar that we frequent. We also have a BOMB Party Bus that we’re using to shuttle other guests to and from the reception to after party or their homes/hotels.
Oh, also. If you have horses/horse drawn carriage be SUPER mindful of the noise produced by your getaway. One wedding I was in had a horse drawn carriage and someone handed out party crackers that spooked the horses RIGHT when the bride was about to climb on. Thankfully no one was hurt, but the owner of the horses was super angry as was the bride. Kind of ruined the moment.
Sparklers and waving flags or flying objects could also be a spooking hazard as well so make sure you communicate with your driver or the owner of the animals.
We had a trolley rented all day! It picked the ladies up from the salon, and the men up from the reception hall (they setup beforehand), and then we went to a few places to take pictures before going to the ceremony venue. After the ceremony, we drove around for a bit, partying, and then on to the reception! Renting the trolley is one of the best things I planned for our wedding, because no one could be late to the ceremony, and everyone thought it was a blast! It was also a great thank you to everyone who did anything for us for the wedding, as it held 29, so we had everyone involved on the trolley. It also meant no drinking and driving, which is always a plus. And it was cheaper than a limo, fit way more people, and it was gorgeous, so it gave us great pictures, both inside and outside. Oh, and it saved us money on parking, as our photographer didn’t charge us milage because he rode on it too.
