Remember Save the Dates with post-it notes? Well, their creator, Tribesmaid Grafxcowgirl (aka Michele), is back with a new DIY wedding project that I love!

Check out a quick tutorial in two photos…

She created these customized match books for her wedding favors by simply purchasing cheap blank matchbooks, printing out her design on sticker paper, trimming and adhering, and voila! The result — these super hip matchbook wedding favors!

Here's how she did it:

Here are the step-by-step instructions for creating my nifty custom matchbook covers:

First, buy the stuff (all pretty cheap!). You will need blank matchbooks (I ordered online, but you may be able to find them elsewhere) and full-size sticker sheet paper that will run through your printer.

You can create a template in your favorite software program (Powerpoint, Photoshop, Illustrator) with about 12 “covers” to a page. You can measure your matchbook by unfolding it, laying a blank piece of paper underneath and tracing around the edges. When you create the template be sure to leave yourself plenty of room for “error.” I extended the area for each cover almost a 1/4 inch so that I had room to trim off from three of the sides. I kept the side that would butt up to the striking area exact.

After you have cut out all of the covers (with some extra area around the three sides), lay a matchbook out, remove the backing from the sticker and carefully place on the matchbook, aligning the bottom edge to the striking area.

Then you just trim the excess around all three sides.

Fold the matchbook cover over and close it…voila!

Comments on HOT DIY Matchbook Favor Action

  1. These are incredible, what I love most is that these are actually useful, people will keep this around for a while (who doesn't occasionally rummage through the drawers for random matchbooks?), they fit in your pocket and everyone will take home a reminder of the wedding even after its said and done. Love this project!

  2. I adore this fun favor idea. I started making some of my own, but thankfully stopped before making 100 because I found out I can't travel with them. I live in California and am getting married in Massachusetts. YOU CAN NOT MAIL OR FLY with more than 2 matchbooks in your checked bags. Just an FYI. 🙂

  3. these are adorable im having candles at my reception and this is a great to place on tables to light candles and as guest favors but where can i find the sticker paper

    • You could get sticker paper at Staples or Office Depot or craft stores anywhere. Its easy to find. Sent from my BlackBerry

  4. I am nearly two years too late in stumbling upon this, but I love it! I have been thinking about making place cards out of matchbooks covered with pretty paper to serve double duty as the favors. The task seems a little daunting, but I think would be easier with the sticker idea! I also think match boxes will look better than books, but I cannot find them ANYWHERE except from that seller on Amazon you linked too and they cost like 4 times as much as the books.
I also am wondering the dimensions of the books if you have any idea this much later? That would be super helpful!

  5. Does anyone have the template for this matchbook cover? I’m working on one, but having a lot of difficulty.

  6. OMG this is brilliant. Wanted to do a matchbox favor (additional) and coffee/tea bags mainly cause matchboxes are useful but also because (I know BAD) we are both smokers. Thank you for posting. Now it doesn’t seem so excessive to have an additional gift for guests.
