How I cater to offbeat weddings
I was born in Houston, Texas from a lineage consisting of First American shamans and traders, as well as ancient and medieval Welsh peoples.
Often found striding up to ceremonies in my black cowboy boots, I am a native Texan and a conundrum to many.
Raised in a “progressive” Southern Baptist household, dancing, smoking, and a little cussin’ here and there were allowed. So were the occasional drink and public display of affection, as well as independent thought. You’re thinking by now, “Not very churchy.” GOOD!
Well, let’s just say behind the “Reverend Benae” persona lies a host of unique relatives, contradictions, and complications that formed the unique and spiritual woman I am today — some might say a hippie cowpoke!
As a young girl, instead of having tea parties with my teddy bears, I instead performed weddings with Barbies, Kens, Pokey & Gumby– and cats and dogs. Thank goodness I eventually grew up!
Around 1994, I was invited to a commitment ceremony in Austin, Texas, and was forever changed by the experience. The shaman-officiant conducted the ceremony to a teary-eyed backyard congregation, joining two people in love and life in a way I had never known. It was at that time I secretly wished I could do the same for people and have since made my wishes come true. In 2005, I received my ordination and haven’t looked back since!
"Our wedding day was perfect and Rev. Benae was a huge part of that. When I tell you this woman went above and beyond on our day, that is no exaggeration. " https://g.co/kgs/YnCxR1
