You're a low key, non-traditional couple who thought long and hard about whether you wanted to have a wedding. But ultimately, you decided your love needs to be celebrated. And I'm here to support you all the way through it.
I've always been drawn to quirky, unique, intentional celebrations. Like a queer poly picnic love-fest that involved two brides hiking barefoot into a gorge. (I wore shoes, thank you very much.) Or a teeny tiny backyard Covid wedding with a custom baked sourdough wedding boule.
When I started out, I wanted to get a lot of experience fast. So I worked for this lovely, classy-ass North Shore wedding photographer and I shot a ton of elegant “traditional” weddings. (E.g, one man, one woman, a historic New England manor, and a massive “bridal party.”) The venues were gorgeous, the couples were lovely, and love is love. But the weddings weren't speaking to my heart. They felt like the wedding someone is “supposed to have,” rather than a unique celebration that is infused with the personality of the people getting married.
I'm incredibly grateful though. Because I decided to blend that classy-ass photography style with the moment-driven candids and deep, honest emotions I love so much. And now I aim to capture both – the beautiful details that tell your story and the genuine moments that unfold throughout your unique day.
In fact, you can call me Johnny Cash, because I walk a lot of lines. Photos that are classy, but real. A personality that's laid back on your wedding day (I grew up in SoCal), but type A about planning allll the details in advance. (I plan so I can relax, you know?) My jokes are possibly hilarious, but also probably terrible. (Like that Johnny Cash one? …I'll let you be the judge.)
One other line I walk is a little bit hard to explain. It's a line between pain and joy. Before pictures became my full-time job, I worked with stroke patients in the hospital. So I was intimately acquainted with how quickly our lives can change. (I guess during Covid, we all got to experience this feeling like a punch to the face.) And I noticed that when someone's life changes, there are certain people who keep showing up. And THAT is why wedding photography means so much to me.
It isn't just the joy and the love (although it is), it's what comes after. Because love challenges us and makes us better and carries us through the hard times. Because love makes the world better, every time, any way it looks. And helping you to cherish the value and the beauty of your love is my life's work.
How I cater to offbeat weddings
I believe that you should wear what you want and be who you want EVERY day, but especially on your wedding day. Through the planning process, I truly want to know you so I can honestly capture your story.
(Side note: Need a list of tailors who make body and size inclusive suits? Go ahead and favorite this link.)
When we talk about your wedding, expect me to go deep. I’ll give you lot of information, but I’ll also ask a lot of questions. (Like, a LOT of questions.) And not about the color scheme, but about your values. And about the feeling and flow of your day. I don’t expect you to have all the answers, but I want to get you thinking. I want to support you. I want your choice to have a wedding to be the best possible choice you could have made. And I want to help you create a day that allows you to be present to experience every second.
Not everyone loves an engagement shoot, but I do. I include them with all of my (non-mini) wedding packages. Firstly, because we get to hang out. (I want to see your cute faces before your wedding.) Secondly, because we get to feel each other out in the photography process. You’ll get super comfortable with the way I guide your interactions for photos and you get to give me all the feedback about which images, poses and moments feel most like you.
Let’s make some classy-ass, gorgeously real pictures!
I knew from our first phone call that Shaina was the right fit for us. She listened and asked questions and it quickly became clear to me that her intent was to truly capture the essence of our celebration. Leading up to our wedding, Shaina was fantastic! She clearly outlined our timeline, set expectations and helped to ensure our plan reflected what WE wanted. Shaina understood that our priority was to spend as much time with our family and friends, but didn't sacrifice getting the shots we wanted. Our experience with Shaina has been incredible and we would highly recommend her.
