The Offbeat Bride: Shkehlaht Belit, healer and urban farmer

Her offbeat partner: Ahe, graphic designer and urban farmer

Date and location of wedding: Rid-All Urban Farm, Cleveland, Ohio — June 23, 2013

Our offbeat wedding at a glance: We had a totally sustainable, raw vegan self-catered food, and a wholistic sacred union ceremony.

We did all the decorating, creating a fire pit, herb spiral, double arches, tiki burners, handmade votives, citronella candles, and reception tables made from buckets and pallets covered with burlap. We also had a plant in a two-liter self-watering planter and a mini tiki burner.

We wore handmade hemp tie-dyed garments. There were no vendors, no bridal party — just family, called “the processional party.” We also had sustainably-crafted wooden rings with semi-precious crushed stone inlays.

Tell us about the ceremony: We attempted to stay away from most mainstream traditions. There was no officiant, no clergy, and no religion. The ceremony was held outside at the place where we met on the solstice last year, Rid-All Urban Farm, and the ceremony was on the solstice this year.

Our biggest challenge: The biggest challenge was creating our space and working through the night for the 45 days leading up to the ceremony.

My favorite moment: My favorite moment was walking down the pathway to the arch we had created and having my “god” come to meet me and kneel down first.
